Abstract

Large-scale and programmable quantum photonic processors are needed to control photonic quantum computations that lead to a quantum advantage. Here, we present a universal 12-mode quantum photonic processor which is the largest of its kind to date. The processor is remotely controllable and seamlessly integrated with a dedicated control software, making the device fully plug-and-play.

Quantum Photonic Processor based on Programmable Integrated Silicon Nitride Circuits

Recently, quantum advantage over classical computation has been claimed using photons [1] . To control photonic quantum computations such as Boson sampling, a non-universal approach on quantum computation, large-scale quantum processors are needed [2] , [3] . To realize scalable and robust photonic quantum processors integrated photonics is a key technology. In our approach we use the integrated waveguide platform based on silicon nitride [4] , due to its low intrinsic losses and technological maturity. The low losses result in a high fidelity of the quantum photonics processor which is mandatory for reliable quantum computation while maturity of the platform allows for scaling up of the dimensions of the processor. Here, we present a universal 12-mode quantum photonics processor which is the largest of its kind to date.

A universal fully reconfigurable 12-mode quantum photonic processor

Caterina Taballione, Reinier van der Meer, Henk Snijders +9 more

Abstract Photonic processors are pivotal for both quantum and classical information processing tasks using light. In particular, linear optical quantum information processing requires both large-scale and low-loss programmable photonic processors. In this paper, we report the demonstration of the largest universal quantum photonic processor to date: a low-loss 12-mode fully tunable linear interferometer with all-to-all mode coupling based on stoichiometric silicon nitride waveguides.

Programmable Quantum Photonic Processor Using Silicon Photonics

Dirk Englund

Abstract : Photons play a central role in many areas of quantum information processing and quantum sensing, ranging from linear optics quantum computing and quantum simulation to quantum communications. A central problem in many of these applications is the need to control many spatial and temporal modes with high efficiency and precision. Photonic integrated circuits can contain closely-spaced and extremely phase-stable components that enable precision control of many spatial and temporal modes in dielectric waveguides. This program developed photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on the silicon-on-insulator platform. We developed large-scale PICs with cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) with precision electro-optic modulators. These PICs have very low internal losses (0.1 dB/MZI) and achieve exceptionally high contrast interference ( 80 dB) over tens of spatial modes. These fully programmable mode transformers have driven experimental and theoretical advances in quantum simulation, cluster-state quantum computing, all-optical quantum repeaters, neuromorphic computing, and other applications. In addition, we developed new schemes for ballistic quantum computation, new methods for high-efficiency single photon sources, a new approach for 3-photon cluster state generation that forms the essential ingredient for percolation-based generation of scalable cluster states, and quantum logic gates based on weak optical nonlinearities.

A single programmable photonic circuit for universal quantum measurements

Wen-Zhe Yan, Lan-Tian Feng, Zhibo Hou +7 more

Programmable photonic quantum processors face a critical challenge: despite significant advances in quantum state preparation and manipulation, measurements remain limited to projective techniques. Here, we demonstrate a programmable measurement processor that overcomes this limitation by enabling arbitrary quantum measurements within a scalable circuit framework. Our large-scale integrated photonic architecture achieves precise coherent control of ancillary quantum systems, realizing a universal four-dimensional quantum measurement device. We benchmark the processor by performing measurement tomography on 100 randomly selected measurements, achieving an average fidelity of 97.7%. The processor's performance exceeds the theoretical limits of projective measurements in three key quantum information tasks: state discrimination (with 23 times lower error), state estimation (with 10.6% higher fidelity), and randomness generation (with 37% more randomness yield), demonstrating its high operational quality. This work establishes a fully programmable quantum measurement processor, advancing the development of universal quantum operations for photonic quantum information processing by providing the key missing component.
