Generation of a frequency-degenerate four-photon entangled state using a silicon nanowire

Lan-Tian Feng, Ming Zhang, Zhi-Yuan Zhou +8 more

Abstract Integrated photonics is becoming an ideal platform for generating two-photon entangled states with high brightness, high stability, and scalability. This high brightness and high quality of photon pair sources encourages researchers further to study and manipulate multiphoton entangled states. Here, we experimentally demonstrate frequency-degenerate four-photon entangled state generation based on a single silicon nanowire 1 cm in length. The polarization encoded entangled states are generated with the help of a Sagnac loop using additional optical elements. The states are analyzed using quantum interference and state tomography techniques. As an example, we show that the generated quantum states can be used to achieve phase super-resolution. Our work provides a method for preparing indistinguishable multi-photon entangled states and realizing quantum algorithms in a compact on-chip setting.

Evaluating a Multi-Color Entangled-Photon Source for a Bosonic Silicon Quantum Circuit

Koki Nagamachi, Yamashita, Hiroki, Mikio Fujiwara +3 more

We evaluated a multi-color two-photon entangled state generated in silicon via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) as a potential source for bosonic integrated circuits. Spatially entangled photon states were created using a pair of silicon waveguides that produced signal and idler photons through SFWM, allowing us to observe quantum interference between them. Assuming that the frequencies of the multi-color photons were nearly identical, we characterized the generated quantum state by performing quantum state tomography on the bosonic system using a linear optical circuit. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using photon-pair sources generated in silicon via SFWM in bosonic optical circuits and highlights their potential for a wide range of applications in silicon-based optical quantum technologies.

Generation and dynamic manipulation of frequency degenerate polarization entangled Bell states by a silicon quantum photonic circuit

Dongning Liu, Jingyuan Zheng, Lingjie Yu +5 more

A silicon quantum photonic circuit was proposed and realized for the generation and the dynamic manipulation of telecom-band frequency-degenerate polarization entangled Bell states. Frequency degenerate biphoton states were generated in four silicon waveguides by spontaneous four wave mixing. They were transformed to polarization entangled Bell states through on-chip quantum interference and quantum superposition, and then coupled to optical fibers. The property of polarization entanglement in generated photon pairs was demonstrated by two-photon interference under two non-orthogonal polarization bases. The output state could be dynamically switched between two Bell states, which was demonstrated by the simplified Bell state measurement. The experiment results indicated that the manipulation speed supported a modulation rate of several tens kHz, showing its potential on applications of quantum communication and quantum information processing requiring Bell state encoding and dynamic control.
