Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors on-fiber

We present a design of a superconducting nanowire single photon detector fabricated on a core of a single mode optical fiber. The proposed design allows high overlap between the fiber light mode and the detector, and consequently, our fabricated devices can remain small in dimension and maintain speed of operation, without sacrificing the detection efficiency. The on-fiber fabrication method is detailed, together with experimental results. The proposed method can be exploited in the future for the fabrication of other fiber coupled devices.

Superconducting single-photon detectors fabricated via a focused electron beam-induced deposition process

Stephan Steinhauer, Adrian Iovan, Samuel Gyger +1 more

Superconducting detectors have become essential devices for high-performance single-photon counting over a wide wavelength range with excellent time resolution. Detector fabrication typically relies on resist-based lithography processes, which can limit possibilities for device integration, e.g., on unconventional substrates. Here, we demonstrate a resist-free fabrication route for realizing superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors based on focused electron beam-induced deposition. Utilizing direct writing of a Pt–C mask, we achieved nanowire meanders with linewidths below 100 nm, operated them as superconducting devices for the detection of visible and near-infrared photons, and showed detector integration on side-polished optical fibers. Being compatible with device fabrication on curved irregular surfaces, our approach could enable superconducting detector integration in complex configurations.

Large sensitive-area NbN nanowire superconducting single-photon detectors fabricated on single-crystal MgO substrates

Shigehito Miki, Mikio Fujiwara, Masahide Sasaki +5 more

We report on the performance of large area NbN nanowire superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs). 20×20μm2 area SSPDs with 80 and 100nm linewidths and 50% fill factor were fabricated in 4-nm-thick NbN films grown on single-crystal MgO substrates. The high quality of the devices was verified by electrical and optical testing and compares favorably to measurements of 10×10μm2 area SSPDs. Measurements of kinetic inductance versus bias current indicate that the constriction density is low. The fiber-coupled detection efficiency of the devices was 0.4%–3.5% at 100Hz dark count rate.
