Scaling studies of percolation phenomena in systems of dimensionality two to seven: Cluster numbers

Abstract

Cluster statistics are obtained by computer simulation for percolation processes on $d$-dimensional lattices with $d=2$ through 7. For all $d$, ${n}_{s}$, the number of $s$-site clusters per site, is found to satisfy reasonably well the scaling hypothesis first proposed by Stauffer. The scaling functions are analyzed for dimensional dependence, and it is found that as $d$ increases they approach very rapidly the exactly known result for the Bethe lattice corresponding to $d=\ensuremath{\infty}$. Corrections to scaling are also studied, and at the upper critical dimension ${d}_{c}=6$, a deviation from scaling consistent with a logarithmic correction is obtained. Some universal quantities such as the ratio of the amplitudes ${C}_{+}$ and ${C}_{\ensuremath{-}}$ of the "susceptibility" (second moment of ${n}_{s}$) below and above the percolation threshold ${p}_{c}$ are also found to approach the Bethe lattice limit very quickly. In addition, our data suggest that $\frac{{C}_{+}}{{C}_{\ensuremath{-}}}$ already assumes the limiting value of unity for $d=6$. This is consistent with the exact relation for the asymmetric decay of ${n}_{s}$ proved by Kunz and Souillard if we adopt the hypothesis that the asymmetry of ${n}_{s}$ about ${p}_{c}$ only enters the corrections to the leading scaling term for $d>~6$.

Series study of random percolation in three dimensions

David S. Gaunt, M F Sykes

New high-density series data for the mean number, percolation probability and 'susceptibility' of finite clusters are presented for bond and site percolation on four standard three-dimensional lattices. A Pade approximant analysis of both high- and low-density series makes particular use of the rather precise unbiased estimates of the percolation threshold, p c , obtained recently by Heermann and Stauffer (1981) for the simple cubic lattice. For this lattice the authors obtain the biased estimate gamma =1.73+or-0.03 for the site problem and a similar estimate but with larger uncertainties for the bond problem. Such a value is significantly larger than earlier series estimates. Assuming gamma to be universal they obtain precise, although biased, estimates of p c for both bond and site percolation on all four lattices. Using the bond estimates of p c they find an overall biased estimate of beta =0.454+or-0.008 for bond percolation on all three-dimensional lattices. (The corresponding site problem requires further study.) Scaling estimates of other critical exponents are alpha =-0.64+or-0.05, delta =4.81+or-0.14, Delta =2.18+or-0.04, nu =0.88+or-0.02 and nu =0.03+or-0.03.

Exact results at the two-dimensional percolation point

Peter H. Kleban, Robert M. Ziff

We derive exact expressions for the excess number of clusters $b$ and the excess cumulants ${b}_{n}$ of a related quantity at the two-dimensional percolation point. High-accuracy computer simulations are in accord with our predictions. The parameter $b$ is a finite-size correction to the Temperley-Lieb or Baxter-Temperley-Ashley formula for the number of clusters per site ${n}_{c}$ in the infinite system limit; the ${b}_{n}$ correct bulk cumulants. Both $b$ and ${b}_{n}$ are universal, and thus depend only on the system's shape. Higher-order corrections show no apparent dependence on fractional powers of the system size.

Percolation transitions in two dimensions

Xiaomei Feng, Youjin Deng, Henk W. J. Blöte

We investigate bond- and site-percolation models on several two-dimensional lattices numerically, by means of transfer-matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The lattices include the square, triangular, honeycomb kagome, and diced lattices with nearest-neighbor bonds, and the square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. Results are presented for the bond-percolation thresholds of the kagome and diced lattices, and the site-percolation thresholds of the square, honeycomb, and diced lattices. We also include the bond- and site-percolation thresholds for the square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. We find that corrections to scaling behave according to the second temperature dimension X_{t2}=4 predicted by the Coulomb gas theory and the theory of conformal invariance. In several cases there is evidence for an additional term with the same exponent, but modified by a logarithmic factor. Only for the site-percolation problem on the triangular lattice does such a logarithmic term appear to be small or absent. The amplitude of the power-law correction associated with X_{t2}=4 is found to be dependent on the orientation of the lattice with respect to the cylindrical geometry of the finite systems.

Scaling and short-time corrections for random walks on two-dimensional exactly percolating clusters

Artemios Keramiotis, Panos Argyrakis, Raoul Kopelman

Random-walk simulations on square-lattice percolation clusters are performed for (a) all clusters at criticality; (b) the largest cluster at nominal criticality; and (c) the largest cluster at exact criticality for each realization (new method). The short-time correction-to-scaling exponent is obtained: \ensuremath{\omega}=-0.48 (for N${<10}^{3}$ Monte Carlo steps). The scaling exponent appears to be in better agreement with the recent Aharony-Stauffer conjecture for the spectral dimension (${d}_{s}$=1.309) than with the Alexander-Orbach-Rammal-Toulouse conjecture (${d}_{s}$=1.333).

Large Lattice Simulation of Random Site Percolation

Shane Macleod, Naeem Jan

We simulate systems up to 4*1012 sites on a square lattice at the percolation threshold, pc=0.592746. We confirm τ=187/91, and report that the correction to scaling exponent, Δ1=0.65±0.05. The mass of the largest and second largest cluster scales with the fractal dimensionality, df=91/48. These exponents, apart from the correction-to-scaling exponent, Δ1, are expected from exact calculations and previous substantial numerical work.

Universal finite-size scaling functions for percolation on three-dimensional lattices

Chai‐Yu Lin, Chin‐Kun Hu

Using a histogram Monte Carlo simulation method (HMCSM), Hu, Lin, and Chen found that bond and site percolation models on planar lattices have universal finite-size scaling functions for the existence probability ${E}_{p},$ the percolation probability $P,$ and the probability ${W}_{n}$ for the appearance of $n$ percolating clusters in these models. In this paper we extend above study to percolation on three-dimensional lattices with various linear dimensions $L.$ Using the HMCSM, we calculate the existence probability ${E}_{p}$ and the percolation probability $P$ for site and bond percolation on a simple-cubic (sc) lattice, and site percolation on body-centered-cubic and face-centered-cubic lattices; each lattice has the same linear dimension in three dimensions. Using the data of ${E}_{p}$ and $P$ in a percolation renormalization group method, we find that the critical exponents obtained are quite consistent with the universality of critical exponents. Using a small number of nonuniversal metric factors, we find that ${E}_{p}$ and $P$ have universal finite-size scaling functions. This implies that the critical ${E}_{p}$ is a universal quantity, which is $0.265\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$ for free boundary conditions and $0.924\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$ for periodic boundary conditions. We also find that ${W}_{n}$ for site and bond percolation on sc lattices have universal finite-size scaling functions.
