Complexity and Floquet dynamics: Nonequilibrium Ising phase transitions

Giancarlo Camilo, Daniel Teixeira

We study the time-dependent circuit complexity of the periodically driven transverse field Ising model using Nielsen's geometric approach. In the high-frequency driving limit the system is known to exhibit nonequilibrium phase transitions governed by the amplitude of the driving field. We analytically compute the complexity in this regime and show that it clearly distinguishes between the different phases, exhibiting a universal linear behavior at early times. We also evaluate the time-averaged complexity, provide evidence of nonanalytic behavior at the critical points, and discuss its origin. Finally, we comment on the freezing of quantum dynamics at specific configurations and on the use of complexity as a tool to understand quantum phase transitions in Floquet systems.

Geometric phases and quantum phase transitions in open systems

Alexander I. Nesterov, Sergei G. Ovchinnikov

The relationship is established between quantum phase transitions and complex geometric phases for open quantum systems governed by a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian with accidental crossing of the eigenvalues. In particular, the geometric phase associated with the ground state of the one-dimensional dissipative Ising model in a transverse magnetic field is evaluated, and it is demonstrated that the related quantum phase transition is of the first order.

Conventional quantum phase transition driven by a complex parameter in a non-Hermitian PT−symmetric Ising model

C. Li, Gang Zhang, X. Z. Zhang +1 more

A conventional quantum phase transition (QPT) can be accessed by varying a real parameter at absolute zero temperature. Motivated by the discovery of the pseudo-Hermiticity of non-Hermitian systems, we explore the QPT in the non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{symmetric}$ Ising model, which is driven by a staggered complex transverse field. Exact solution shows that the Laplacian of the ground-state energy density, with respect to real and imaginary components of the transverse field, diverges on the boundary in the complex plane. The phase diagram indicates that the imaginary transverse field has the effect of shrinking the paramagnetic phase. In addition, we also investigate the connection between the geometric phase and the QPT.
