Abstract

Abstract This paper demonstrates the efficiency of using optical feedback without amplifiers to generate subcarrier waves in the microwave phase modulator output spectrum for quantum communications. It is proposed ideas for expanding the functionality of quantum communication systems and communication systems using DWDM standarts.

Universal Microwave Photonics Approach to Frequency-Coded Quantum Key Distribution

Oleg G. Morozov, Airat Sakhabutdinov, Gennady A. Morozov +1 more

Design principles of universal microwave photonics system (MPS) for quantum key distribution (QKD) with frequency coding are concerned. Its main modulation concept lies in single photon generation on sidebands of optical carrier and determination of photons ground state through its registration and the amplitude value of its carrier frequency as reference channel. So, it is necessary to solve problems of signal-to-carrier ratio of single photon detector (SPD) and aspects of photon number splitting (PNS) attack, nonlinear phase modulation (NPM) between carrier and sidebands in fiber, and finally, spectral selection of carrier in receiver. The technologies, based on the modulation conversion of an optical carrier, are widely used in microwave photonics. Due to the natural symmetry of modulated signals and the highest achievable ratio of the modulation conversions, amplitude-phase modulation with complete or partial suppression of the optical carrier has found a particularly wide application in MPS. The characteristics of advanced MPS for QKD with frequency coding and carrier suppression based on tandem amplitude modulation and phase commutation are presented. New systems can have classical symmetric or non-classical asymmetric structure for QKD based only on spectral selection of carrier and subcarriers without re-modulation.

Pulsed phase modulation with harmonic electric control signal for quantum key distribution implementations

Andrei Gaidash, George P. Miroshnichenko, Козубов Антон Владимирович

In this work, we investigate an alternative approach to phase modulation for information encoding and decoding in quantum key distribution systems. Specifically, we propose pulsed phase modulation, i.e. it has an envelope in addition to previously considered only harmonic temporal behavior of modulation index (depth), as a replacement for the conventional use of both intensity and phase modulators, which enables a more compact and cost-effective optical design. We further analyze how the principal parameters of this scheme affect the interference observed at the receiver and, consequently, their contribution to the quantum bit error rate in a subcarrier-wave quantum key distribution implementation.

A theoretical study of subcarrier-wave quantum key distribution system integration with an optical transport network utilizing dense wavelength division multiplexing

Fedor Kiselev, Natalia Veselkova, Roman Goncharov +1 more

In this paper we study the performance of subcarrier-wave quantum key distribution (SCW QKD) in the presence of classical channels of optical transport network utilizing dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). We consider the impact of spontaneous Raman scattering noise as well as the four-wave mixing and channel isolation efficiency. We calculate quantum bit error rate as well as the secure key generation rate of SCW-QKD protocol for different parameters of DWDM system and quantum channel allocations. Our calculations show, that quantum channel allocation at the wavelength of 1310 nm is preferable to allocation at C-band due to lower nonlinear noise, despite fiber's larger attenuation at this wavelength.

Analysis of Subcarrier Multiplexed Quantum Key Distribution Systems: Signal, Intermodulation, and Quantum Bit Error Rate

J. Capmany, Arturo Ortigosa-Blanch, Jose Mora +3 more

This paper provides an in-depth theoretical analysis of subcarrier multiplexed quantum key distribution (SCM-QKD) systems, taking into account as many factors of impairment as possible and especially considering the influence of nonlinear signal mixing on the end-to-end quantum bit error rate (QBER) and the useful key rate. A detailed analysis of SCM-QKD is performed considering the different factors affecting the sideband visibility (drifts in the modulator bias points, modulation index mismatch between Alice and Bob subcarriers) and the impact of nonlinear signal mixing leaking into otherwise void subcarrier sidebands. In a similar way to classical photonic radio-over-fiber telecommunication and cable TV systems, the impact of this nonlinear signal mixing can be accounted in terms of a quantum carrier to noise ratio that depends on the specific frequency plan that is implemented. QBER and useful key rate results for three different frequency plans featuring$N$$=$15 (low-count channel system),$N$$=$30 (intermediate-count channel system), and$N$$=$50 (high-count channel system) channels are provided, showing that photon nonlinear mixing can be of importance in middle- and high-count SCM-QKD systems ($N$≫ 30), with moderate RF modulation indexes ($m$≫ 5%). In practical terms, nonlinear signal mixing can be neglected if low modulation indexes ($m$≪ 2%) are employed to encode the photons in the subcarrier sidebands.

Performance of the subcarrier-wave quantum key distribution in the presence of spontaneous Raman scattering noise generated by classical DWDM channels

Fedor Kiselev, Roman Goncharov, Natalia Veselkova +3 more

In this paper we study performance of the subcarrier-wave quantum key distribution system (SCW QKD) in the presence of spontaneous Raman scattering (SpRS) noise generated by classical channels of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network within a single-mode optical fiber. We present the mathematical model for evaluation of the quantum bit error rate (QBER) and the secure key generation rate with the SpRS noise taken into account. We consider two regimes of the SCW QKD system: the continuous wave regime that uses continuous wave laser and the pulsed regime. For these regimes, performance of the system is analyzed depending on receiver sensitivity of classical DWDM. It is found that the pulsed regime outperforms the continuous wave regime in both the secure key generation rate and the maximum achievable distance.
