Abstract

The integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) devices with the existing optical fiber networks is of great significance in reducing the deployment costs and saving fiber resources. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is expected to be a desirable approach to fulfill this ultimate task. In this paper, we analyze the dominant noises in WDM-based QKD system and optimize the key parameters based on a modified model with 200 GHz channel spacing. Then, an appropriate decoy-state method is adopted to estimate the system performance considering statistical fluctuations. Finally, a three-layer artificial neural network is used to train and predict the optimal mean photon numbers within different situations. Our work provides a useful method for the parameters optimization of WDM-QKD system and accelerates the practical development of QKD that coexists with the current backbone fiber infrastructure.

Practical security of wavelength-multiplexed decoy-state quantum key distribution

Liang-Yuan Zhao, Qianjun Wu, Hong-Kang Qiu +2 more

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) of quantum key distribution (QKD) with classical optical channels has been proven to be feasible experimentally. In this paper, we will analyze the practical security of WDM-QKD theoretically. Specifically, we first establish the noise model of classical signals. Then, the influence of classical noises on the performance of decoy-state WDM-QKD is studied with a finite-key security analysis. For numerical simulations, the effect of classical noise-reduction methods for different experimental settings is given. The secret key rate and maximum transmission distance of WDM-QKD is simulated with various sent number of quantum pulses or transmitted power of classical signals. Furthermore, the performance of two kinds of decoy-state WDM-QKD is compared, which shows that the optimal decoy-state protocol for WDM-QKD is related to the sent number of quantum pulses. Since WDM-QKD is desired to reduce the cost of QKD networks and since experiments have already been carried out, our work can not only close the gap between theory and practice, but also be used to optimize the experimental parameters and improve its performance.

Improving the performance of practical wavelength division multiplexing decoy-state quantum key distribution with advantage distillation

Bumil Kim, Jun Heo

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a promising method for sharing an information-theoretically secure secret key using the properties of quantum mechanics. Although QKD is the most practical field in quantum information science, its widespread adoption is constrained by high implementation costs. Despite the cost-effectiveness of propagating QKD with classical communication using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the noise generated by relatively strong classical signals degrades QKD performance. Even though several mitigation strategies exist, they often involve complexity or additional hardware. In this paper, we apply advantage distillation (AD) to enhance the performance of a practical decoy-state BB84 QKD system operating in a WDM environment. We perform finite-key analysis in both co-propagation and counter-propagation scenarios with three classical channels, and furthermore we examine the effects of varying the number of classical channels and the optical power per channel. A comparison of simulation results obtained with and without AD demonstrates that AD is robust to noise originating from classical channels. These results show that AD increases the secure key rate and transmission distance in the WDM-based QKD environment under both co-propagation and counter-propagation without requiring hardware changes. These findings suggest advantage distillation is a promising strategy for the widespread adoption of WDM-based QKD, including in challenging counter-propagation cases.

Parameter Optimization of Quantum Key Distribution in Quantum-Classical WDM-SDM Coexistence Systems

Yaoxian Gao, Yongmei Sun, Yuefeng Ji

In quantum-classical coexistence systems, classical noise and system loss can significantly affect the performance of quantum key distribution (QKD), while the fixed-parameter QKD (FPQ) cannot adapt to varying conditions. In this paper, we propose a local search algorithm (LSA) for QKD to optimize the parameters in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and space division multiplexing (SDM) systems. Simulation results show that LSA can achieve 99.9% performance of the exhaustive search algorithm, while significantly reducing computational complexity. Moreover, LSA improves QKD performance by 31.9% over standard single mode fiber and 24.5% over multicore fiber in quantum-classical coexistence systems.

Cost-Efficient Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Over WDM Networks

Yuan Cao, Yongli Zhao, Jianquan Wang +3 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses the laws of quantum mechanics to distribute secret keys with information-theoretic security. To realize QKD for secure communications among multiple distant users, fiber-based QKD networks can be deployed with today's available technologies. Incorporating QKD into existing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network infrastructure provides a practical way to reduce the difficulty and cost of QKD networking. Nonetheless, the costs of QKD nodes and QKD links are still considered as the major barriers to long-distance QKD network deployment in practice. In this work, we study how to minimize the cost of deploying QKD-over-WDM backbone networks. We introduce a general architecture of QKD-over-WDM backbone networks. A novel cost-oriented model is defined to elaborate the cost-minimized problem, in which various QKD network components including QKD transceivers, QKD auxiliary equipment for QKD backbone nodes and trusted repeater nodes (TRNs), and QKD links are considered. The physical-layer parameters such as secret-key rate, physical distance, and the layout of TRNs are also incorporated in our defined model. We develop an integer linear programming (ILP) model and a novel cost-efficient QKD networking (CEQN) heuristic algorithm to address the cost-minimized problem. The extensive simulations indicate that our proposed approaches are effective in reducing the cost of deploying QKD-over-WDM backbone networks, where the designed CEQN algorithm is efficient to demonstrate similar to the ILP model. Finally, some open issues in future work are discussed, given that this work only presents an early highlevel analysis as opposed to a definitive detailed model.

Abstract Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology can improve the networking level and overcome the shortcomings of low key rate under the existing technic background of measurement device independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol application. reference frame independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) protocol cut down on the influence of the reference frame drift on the key distribution system. The decoy state protocol has important development prospects in the development of quantum communication networking. Combining the advantages of of the above protocols to realize RFI-MDI-QKD with WDM, the results show that the key distribution efficiency is improved with the increase in the number of WDM multiplexed channels, which promotes the further exploration and achievement of QKD networking application.
