Quantum entanglement of complex photon polarization patterns in vector beams

Robert Fickler, Radek Łapkiewicz, Sven Ramelow +1 more

We report the efficient creation and detection of hybrid entanglement between one photon's polarization and another photon's complex transverse polarization pattern including various polarization singularities. The polarization measurement of the first photon triggers a polarization-sensitive imaging of its partner photon, the vector photon, using a single-photon-sensitive camera. Thereby, the vector photon's complex polarization pattern is reconstructed tomographically dependent on the type of polarization measurement performed on its partner. To evaluate the quality of the observed patterns, we introduce a fidelity-like measure which compares the reconstructed polarization with the theoretically expected one at every transverse spatial position. We find that the measured polarization patterns and the theory overlap by more than 90%. Moreover, we visualize the varying strengths of polarization entanglement for different transverse regions and demonstrate an interesting phenomenon: Each vector photon can be both entangled and not entangled in polarization with its partner photon. We give an intuitive, information-theoretical explanation for our results. Our results pave the way to study quantum properties of the rich field of such complex light modes with the potential to improve various applications in quantum informational tasks.

Dual wavelength source of entanglement for space quantum communication

Valentin Dumas, Alek Lagarrigue, Tess Troisi +4 more

We report the demonstration of a bulk, intrinsically phase-stable source of polarization- and time-energy-entangled photon pairs at 810nm and 1550nm, directly coupled into single-mode optical fibers. This highly non-degenerate wavelength combination is well suited for hybrid quantum communication networks, enabling low-loss transmission in optical fibers at 1550nm while maintaining efficient free-space propagation and detection at 810nm. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal embedded in a polarization Sagnac interferometer, providing inherent stability and dual-degree-of-freedom entanglement. We measure a spectral brightness of B = 4800 pair/s/mW/GHz, with fiber coupling efficiencies exceeding 0.48 at both wavelengths. The entanglement quality is characterized by high-visibility two-photon interference, yielding net visibilities of 0.995 in the polarization basis and 0.991 in the energy-time basis. These performances demonstrate a compact and robust entanglement source compatible with hybrid fiber/free-space quantum key distribution architectures, and suitable for future ground-to-satellite quantum communication links.

Characterization of two-photon polarization mixed states generated from entangled-classical hybrid photon source

H. Kumano, Ken-ichi Matsuda, S. Ekuni +2 more

We experimentally prepare bi-photon mixed states in polarization employing an entangled-classical hybrid photon emitter which can properly model solid-state entangled photon sources with uncorrelated background photons. Polarization-uncorrelated photon pairs in totally mixed (TM) states are embodied with classical thermal radiation, while the polarization-entangled ones in a Bell state are generated by conventional parametric down conversion. The bi-photon states generated from the hybrid photon emitter are characterized in terms of a linear entropy-tangle plane, which reveals the formation of two-qubit Werner states. We also propose a direct way for evaluating the Werner states by means of minimal coincidence counts measurements. This simple method can be widely applicable in examining the bi-photon states from solid-state entangled photon sources, in which the polarization-entangled photon pairs have temporal correlation while the background photons in the TM states do not.
