The asymmetric quantum Rabi model in the polaron picture

Maoxin Liu, Zu‐Jian Ying, Jun‐Hong An +2 more

Abstract The concept of the polaron in condensed matter physics has been extended to the Rabi model, where polarons resulting from the coupling between a two-level system and single-mode photons represent two oppositely displaced oscillators. Interestingly, tunneling between these two displaced oscillators can induce an anti-polaron, which has not been systematically explored in the literature, especially in the presence of an asymmetric term. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the competition between the polaron and anti-polaron under the interplay of the coupling strength and the asymmetric term. While intuitively the anti-polaron should be secondary owing to its higher potential energy, we find that, under certain conditions, the minor anti-polaron may gain a reversal in the weight over the major polaron. If the asymmetric amplitude ϵ is smaller than the harmonic frequency ω , such an overweighted anti-polaron can occur beyond a critical value of the coupling strength g ; if ϵ is larger, the anti-polaron can even be always overweighted at any g . We propose that the explicit occurrence of the overweighted anti-polaron can be monitored by a displacement transition from negative to positive values. This displacement is an experimentally accessible observable, which can be measured by quantum optical methods, such as balanced Homodyne detection.

Emergence of a Bose polaron in a small ring threaded by the Aharonov-Bohm flux

Fabian Brauneis, Areg Ghazaryan, H.‐W. Hammer +1 more

The model of a ring threaded by the Aharonov-Bohm flux underlies our understanding of a coupling between gauge potentials and matter. The typical formulation of the model is based upon a single particle picture, and should be extended when interactions with other particles become relevant. Here, we illustrate such an extension for a particle in an Aharonov-Bohm ring subject to interactions with a weakly interacting Bose gas. We show that the ground state of the system can be described using the Bose polaron concept -- a particle dressed by interactions with a bosonic environment. We connect the energy spectrum to the effective mass of the polaron, and demonstrate how to change currents in the system by tuning boson-particle interactions. Our results suggest the Aharonov-Bohm ring as a platform for studying coherence and few- to many-body crossover of quasi-particles that arise from an impurity immersed in a medium.

Dark Polaron Theory for High Intensity Laser Cooling

Marcel Morillas-Rozas, Alberto López-García, Enamul Haque +2 more

Conventional laser control schemes for cooling and gate operation of trapped ions are limited to the regime of weak laser intensities and small Lamb-Dicke parameters. To overcome this limitation, we present the concept of dark polarons: spatially extended states of pseudospin polarization that are fully decoupled from a lambda laser configuration. In this picture, all high-order Lamb-Dicke terms collapse into a single linear coupling independent of laser intensity. We apply it to definitively elucidate the reasons behind cooling rate limitations observed in recent experimental implementations of electromagnetically induced transparency with high-intensity lasers.
