Multi-photon multi-quantum transitions in the spin- 3 2 silicon-vacancy centers of SiC

Silicon vacancy centers in silicon carbide are promising candidates for storing and manipulating quantum information. Implementation of fast quantum gates is an essential requirement for quantum information processing. In a low magnetic field, the resonance frequencies of silicon vacancy spins are in the range of a few MHz, the same order of magnitude as the Rabi frequencies of typical control fields. As a consequence, the rotating wave approximation becomes invalid and nonlinear processes like the absorption and emission of multiple photons become relevant. This paper focuses on multi-photon transitions of negatively charged silicon vacancies driven by a strong RF field. We present continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectra measured at different RF powers to identify the 1-, 2-, and 3 RF photon transitions of different types of the silicon vacancy in the $6H$-SIC polytype. Time-resolved experiments of Rabi oscillations and free induction decays of these multiple RF photon transitions were observed. Apart from zero-field data, we also present spectra in magnetic fields with different strength and orientation with respect to the system's symmetry axis.

Aligned atoms in strong oscillating RF fields. I. The unmodulated resonance signals

E Jacobson

In radio frequency (RF) experiments on aligned atoms (e.g. optical double resonance) new phenomena can be found in the case of longitudinal excitation if a strong oscillating RF field is used: both the positions of the RF resonances (RF shift) and the widths (power broadening) depend on the direction of the light observed and on the state of its (linear) polarisation. This applies to the main (single-quantum) transitions as well as the (odd) multi-quanta transitions. These effects have been observed in an experiment on aligned mercury atoms in the metastable 6 3 P 2 state and have been confirmed by numerical calculations based on the semiclassical approach.

EIT spectra of Rydberg atoms dressed with dual-tone radio-frequency fields

Maitreyi Jayaseelan, Andrew P. Rotunno, Nikunjkumar Prajapati +4 more

We examine spectral signatures of Rydberg atoms driven with near-resonant dual-tone radio-frequency (RF) fields in the regime of strong driving. We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically model a variety of nonlinear and multiphoton phenomena in the atomic Rydberg response that manifest in the EIT spectra. Our results echo previous studies of two-level atoms driven with bichromatic optical fields. In comparison to the optical studies, the RF-driven Rydberg system utilizes a more complex excitation pathway, and electromagnetic fields from two different spectral regimes: a two-photon optical excitation continuously creates highly excited Rydberg atoms, while RF fields drive resonant coupling between the Rydberg levels and generate strong mixing. Yet, our spectra reflect nearly identical effects of the dual-tone RF fields on the atomic Rydberg observables, showing detuning-dependent splittings and Rabi frequency dependent peak numbers and relative strengths, and avoided crossings at subharmonic resonances. We thus validate previous two-state models in this more complex physical system. In the context of Rydberg electrometry, we use these investigations to explore a technique where we tune a known RF field to observe spectra which give frequency and power of an unknown RF field using the complex dual-tone spectra.
