Abstract

We observed collective atomic resonances and coherent backscattering of light from rare-earth doped crystals by spatio-spectral tailoring of atomic absorption. The observation enables creation of efficient solid-state subradiant quantum memories and superradiant photon sources.

Rare earth ions in solids provide a versatile platform for quantum optical information control. Our research focuses on light storage at telecom wavelengths in Erbium-doped crystals, aiming to develop efficient quantum optical memories for applications in quantum communication and computation. Additionally, we design solid-state devices relying on collective atom-atom interactions to enhance light-matter interactions, based on rare-earth photonic devices.

Quantum state storage and reconstruction in solids

A scheme for highly efficient storage and recall of single- and few-photon wave-packets in solid state materials (here inorganic crystals doped with rare-earth ions) is presented. The scheme is supported by experimental data showing that single-photon absorption effects can be observed in these materials and also how the materials can be tailored for the quantum state storage and reconstruction operation using suitably selected excitation pulses.
