Abstract

Two-photon absorption is enhanced by time-frequency entanglement of photon pairs at extremely low optical flux, yet we find theoretically that for typical molecules TPA event rates are so low as to be unobservable.

While two-photon absorption (TPA) and other forms of nonlinear interactions of molecules with isolated time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) have been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This paper presents a detailed theoretical study of quantum-enhanced TPA by both photon-number correlations and spectral correlations, including an account of the deleterious effects of dispersion. While such correlations in EPP created by spontaneous parametric down conversion can increase the TPA rate significantly in the regime of extremely low optical flux, we find that for typical molecules in solution this regime corresponds to such low TPA event rates as to be unobservable in practice. Our results support the usefulness of EPP spectroscopy in atomic or other narrow-linewidth systems, while questioning the efficacy of such approaches for broadband systems including molecules in solution.

When a low flux of time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) illuminates a two-photon transition, the rate of two-photon absorption (TPA) can be enhanced considerably by the quantum nature of photon number correlations and frequency correlations. We use a quantum-theoretic derivation of entangled TPA (ETPA) and calculate an upper bound on the amount of quantum enhancement that is possible in such systems. The derived bounds indicate that in order to observe ETPA the experiments would need to operate at a combination of significantly higher rates of EPP illumination, molecular concentrations, and conventional TPA cross sections than are achieved in typical experiments.

Entangled two-photon absorption by atoms and molecules: A quantum optics tutorial

Two-photon absorption (TPA) and other nonlinear interactions of molecules with time-frequency-entangled photon pairs have been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects. Therefore, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This Tutorial presents a detailed theoretical study of one- and two-photon absorption by molecules, focusing on how to treat the quantum nature of light. We review some basic quantum optics theory and then we review the density-matrix (Liouville) derivation of molecular optical response, emphasizing how to incorporate quantum states of light into the treatment. For illustration, we treat in detail the TPA of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down conversion, with an emphasis on how quantum light TPA differs from that with classical light. In particular, we treat the question of how much enhancement of the TPA rate can be achieved using entangled states. This Tutorial includes a review of known theoretical methods and results as well as some extensions, especially the comparison of TPA processes that occur via far-off-resonant intermediate states only and those that involve off-resonant intermediate states by virtue of dephasing processes. A brief discussion of the main challenges facing experimental studies of entangled two-photon absorption is also given.

Towards Optimized Photon-Pair Sources for Two-Photon Transitions

Two-photon absorption (TPA) is a nonlinear optical process with wide applications in fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy of organic molecules and compounds, as it enables atoms or molecules to transition into states that may otherwise be inaccessible by a single photon, either because of selection rules or energy conservation. Despite its common use, TPA is a rather inefficient process, often requiring very large photon numbers to produce significant results. It has been demonstrated and analytically described [1,2], that using frequency entangled pairs of photons can in some cases enhance the efficiency of TPA. For this to occur, the joint spectral amplitude (JSA) of the photon-pair state, which describes the spectral entanglement between the pair, must be engineered according to the spectral properties of the TPA response-function of the specific system in question. In this work, we consider different cases for the spectral functionality of TPA and propose that the control of the group indices of the modes involved in the pair-generation process is a key property in the design of photon-pair sources for optimized TPA.

An investigation of two-photon absorption with entangled photon pairs

We present an ongoing experiment to investigate the potential enhancement of the two-photon absorption (TPA) rate of an atom using time–frequency-entangled photon pairs, a process known as entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA). There has been significant debate in the literature regarding the existence and magnitude of such enhancement. Previous studies have primarily focused on ETPA in molecular fluorophores, which are relevant for biological imaging applications but typically exhibit relatively low two-photon cross sections, often not exceeding 10⁻⁵⁰ cm⁴s/photon. In this work, we sacrifice broad applicability for experimental practicality, and instead probe ETPA in rubidium vapor, which has a comparatively large two-photon cross section (∼10⁻¹⁸ cm⁴s/photon) relative to most molecular fluorophores used in prior studies. We have developed and characterized an entangled photon-pair source, and have observed two-photon absorption in rubidium vapor. We have also reproduced previous theoretical models of ETPA. Preliminary results are presented, along with a discussion of the future direction of the experiment.

Limitations in Fluorescence-Detected Entangled Two-Photon-Absorption Experiments: Exploring the Low- to High-Gain Squeezing Regimes

We closely replicated and extended a recent experiment ("Spatial properties of entangled two-photon absorption," Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 183601, 2022) that reportedly observed enhancement of two-photon absorption rates in molecular samples by using time-frequency-entangled photon pairs, and we found that in the low-flux regime, where such enhancement is theoretically predicted in-principle, the two-photon fluorescence signal is below detection threshold using current state-of-the-art methods. The results are important in the context of efforts to enable quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy and imaging at ultra-low optical flux. Using an optical parametric down-conversion photon-pair source that can be varied from the low-gain spontaneous regime to the high-gain squeezing regime, we observed two-photon-induced fluorescence in the high-gain regime but in the low-gain regime any fluorescence was below detection threshold. We supplemented the molecular fluorescence experiments with a study of nonlinear-optical sum-frequency generation, for which we are able to observe the low-to-high-gain crossover, thereby verifying our theoretical models and experimental techniques. The observed rates (or lack thereof) in both experiments are consistent with theoretical predictions and with our previous experiments, and indicate that time-frequency photon entanglement does not provide a practical means to enhance in-solution molecular two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy or imaging with current techniques.
