A microscopic study of spin-polarized neutron matter

Abstract

In this work, the static fluctuation approximation (SFA) is used to investigate the thermodynamic properties of spin-polarized neutron matter. The energy per particle, pressure, entropy per particle, specific heat capacity, and effective magnetic field are studied as functions of density, temperature, and polarization fraction. The Argonne v18 nucleon–nucleon potential is used here. It is found that the energy per particle, pressure, entropy per particle, and effective magnetic field increase as the density or temperature increases. Also, the energy per particle and pressure are linearly dependent on the quadratic spin polarization δ2. The system becomes more ordered as δ increases. Our calculations are found to be in good agreement with previously published results obtained with different many-body techniques, such as the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method, the Brueckner–Hartree–Fock (BHF) approach, and the Dirac–Brueckner–Hartree–Fock (DBHF) technique.

Lowest order constrained variational calculation of polarized neutron matter at finite temperature

G. H. Bordbar, M. Bigdeli

Some properties of polarized neutron matter at finite temperature have been studied using the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method with the Argonne V18 (AV18) potential. Our results indicate that a spontaneous transition to the ferromagnetic phase does not occur. Effective mass, free energy, magnetic susceptibility, entropy, and the equation of state of polarized neutron matter at finite temperature are also calculated. A comparison is also made between our results and those of other many-body techniques.

SPIN-POLARIZED ATOMIC HYDROGEN IN THE STATIC FLUCTUATION APPROXIMATION

B.R. Joudeh, Mohamed K. Al-Sugheir, H. B. Ghassib

In this paper we use the so-called static fluctuation approximation (SFA) to calculate the thermodynamic properties of spin-polarized atomic hydrogen. This approximation is based on the replacement of the square of the local-field operator with its mean value. A closed set of nonlinear integral equations is derived for neutral many-bosonic systems. This set is solved numerically by an iteration method for two triplet-state potentials: a Morse- and Silvera-type potentials. It is found that the mean internal energy per unit volume, the pressure, the entropy per unit volume, and the specific heat per unit volume increase with temperature and decrease with spin polarization in the low-temperature region (<8 mK ); whereas the condensate fraction increases with an applied magnetic field. It is also found that these quantities are nearly independent of spin polarization for high temperatures (>0.1 K ), and that they are independent of the number density up to 10-3Å-3 in the low-temperature region.

Comparative study of neutron and nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials

M. Baldo, A. Polls, Arnau Rios +2 more

We present calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron and symmetric nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials for different many-body theories. We compare critically the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results to other formalisms, such as the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone expansion up to third order, self-consistent Green's functions, auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo, and Fermi hypernetted chain. We evaluate the importance of spin-orbit and tensor correlations in the equation of state and find these to be important in a wide range of densities.

Hot neutron matter from a self-consistent Green's-functions approach

Arnau Rios, A. Polls, Isaac Vidaña

A systematic study of the microscopic and thermodynamical properties of pure neutron matter at finite temperature within the self-consistent Green's-function approach is performed. The model dependence of these results is analyzed by both comparing the results obtained with two different microscopic interactions, the CD Bonn and the Argonne V18 potentials, and by analyzing the results obtained with other approaches, such as the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation, the variational approach, and the virial expansion.

Fermi polaron in low-density spin-polarized neutron matter

Isaac Vidaña

I study the properties of a spin-down neutron impurity immersed in a low-density free Fermi gas of spin-up neutrons. In particular, I analyze its energy (${E}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$), effective mass (${m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}^{*}$), and quasiparticle residue (${Z}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$). Results are compared with those of state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the attractive Fermi polaron realized in ultracold atomic gases experiments, and with those of previous studies of the neutron polaron. Calculations are performed within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach using the chiral two-body nucleon-nucleon interaction of Entem and Machleidt at ${\mathrm{N}}^{3}\mathrm{LO}$ with a 500 MeV cut-off and the Argonne V18 phenomenological potential. Only contributions from the ${}^{1}{S}_{0}$ partial wave, which is the dominant one in the low-density region considered, are included. Contributions from three-nucleon forces are expected to be irrelevant at these densities and, therefore, are neglected in the calculation. It is shown that for Fermi momenta between $\ensuremath{\approx}0.25$ and $\ensuremath{\approx}0.45\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{fm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ the energy, effective mass, and quasiparticle residue of the impurity vary only slightly, respectively, in the ranges $\ensuremath{-}0.604\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{E}_{F}<{E}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<\ensuremath{-}0.635\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{E}_{F}$, $1.300\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}m<{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}^{*}<1.085\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}m$, and $0.741<{Z}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<0.836$ in the case of the chiral interaction, and $\ensuremath{-}0.621\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{E}_{F}<{E}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<\ensuremath{-}0.643\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{E}_{F}$, $1.310\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}m<{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}^{*}<1.089\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}m$, and $0.739<{Z}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<0.832$ when using the Argonne V18 potential. These results are compatible with those derived from ultracold atoms and show that a spin-down neutron impurity in a free Fermi gas of spin-up neutrons with a Fermi momentum in the range $0.25\ensuremath{\lesssim}{k}_{F}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.45\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{fm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ exhibits properties very similar to those of an attractive Fermi polaron in the unitary limit.

A microscopic study of spin-polarized 40K atoms in one dimension using the static fluctuation approximation (SFA)

H.A. Al-Khzon, M.M. Al-Qahtani

The thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a spin-mixture of 40K atoms in a 1D harmonic trap, in the presence of an external magnetic field H, are studied using the static fluctuation approximation (SFA). The two-body interaction used is the contact potential. The thermodynamic properties include the chemical potential, energy per particle, specific heat capacity, and entropy per particle. The magnetic properties comprise the magnetization per particle and susceptibility per particle. A phase transition is observed for the repulsive interactions around 0.35TF and 0.5TF in the channels {–9/2, –7/2} and {–9/2, –5/2}, respectively. A peak appears in the entropy and susceptibility at effective scattering length |a1d| ≈ 0.16 μm. For the attractive interactions, three different behaviors depending on H are found in the low-temperature limit. The first behavior is when H < Hc, where Hc is the critical magnetic field, and typical peaks emerge. The second behavior is at H = Hc, and a magnetic phase transition occurs. The third behavior is when H > Hc and the system becomes a partially polarized phase. Our results are consistent with the reported results obtained by the local density approximation, thermal Bethe ansatz method, mean-field approximation, and quantum transfer matrix method.
