Abstract

The recent evolutions in the convergence of QKD and classical communication systems are described, together with the relevance of SDN as a suitable approach for a real integration between QKD and WDM networks. Preliminary experimental results on a discrete-variable QKD prototype working in the O-band co-propagating with 40 50-GHz C-band information channels are reported, showing the capabilities of QKD in short/medium reach optical networks.

Integration of QKD Technologies in Advanced Optical Networks

Alberto Gatto, Marco Ferrari, Marco Brunero +9 more

The coexistence of QKD and classical communication systems is described, identifying the principal limitations to its practical realization. The relevance of SDN as a suitable approach for a real integration between QKD and WDM networks is presented, together with the description of novel rateless error correcting codes (ECC) suitable for QKD reconciliation. Preliminary experimental results on a discrete-variable QKD field trial, over production optical fibers deployed in the metropolitan area of Turin in presence of high-bitrate classic channels, are reported. Stable performance on a week-long interval is demonstrated, showing the capabilities of QKD in short/medium reach optical networks. This work is part of the activities of the PON project “Development of quantum systems and technologies for IT security in communication networks” (QUANCOM) which aims to the realization of a metropolitan quantum communication network through the collaboration between universities, research centers and companies operating in the communication market area.

On the Adoption of Continuous-Variable QKD in Optical Networks

Michela Svaluto Moreolo, Masab Iqbal, Arturo Villegas +2 more

Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is arising as an attractive technology for quantum secure communications in future optical networks, thanks to its higher compatibility with conventional telecommunication systems. In fact, CV-QKD adopts opto-electronic devices of coherent optical systems, enabling the use of commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS) and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). This favors a faster and sustainable adoption of this technology in optical networks. Also, smoother integration within the network infrastructure can be envisioned, in coexistence with classical communications, further facilitated and accelerated by software defined networking (SDN). In this invited contribution, the adoption of CV-QKD in future optical networks is discussed, presenting our recent results.

Integration of QKD in WDM networks

Paolo Martelli, Alberto Gatto, Marco Brunero +4 more

The theme of the integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) in existing WDM optical networks will be discussed. Some evaluations about a reduced-cost implementation of BB84 protocol for QKD will be presented, where a QKD channel in O band is added to classical C-band WDM channels in the same fiber.

Integrating QKD and classical optical networks: an SDN control approach

Emilio Paolini, Nicola Andriolli, Marco Brunero +4 more

This demo presents an SDN-based control framework for integrating Quantum Key Distri- bution (QKD) with classical optical networks. It addresses limitations of existing standards, enabling efficient and secure integration of QKD into communication networks. The framework advances the practical deployment of QKD technology in real-world scenarios.

Efficient Solutions for Quantum Secure Communications in Future Optical Networks

Michela Svaluto Moreolo, Masab Iqbal, Laia Nadal +1 more

To face the quantum era and the prospect or threat of quantum computing, especially in a disaggregated network environment, the design and implementation of efficient quantum secure communication systems facilitating their integration in the optical network infrastructure is crucial. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is one of the most promising technologies to ensure long-term security. In particular, continuous-variable QKD results as an efficient solution more compatible and suitable to be integrated with conventional optical systems. In this work, quantum secure systems based on QKD for enabling a smooth and sustainable integration in optical networks are introduced, considering the related challenges, towards future secure 6G networks.

Quantum Key Distribution Technologies for Secured Passive Optical Networks

Alessandro Gagliano, Paola Parolari, Eliana Mazza +7 more

The integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) into passive optical networks (PONs) poses new challenges due to the specific characteristics of the access network, as the high losses from passive splitters and the spontaneous Raman scattering noise generated by classical channels co-propagating in the same optical fiber. In this paper, different QKD technologies and implementations are compared, taking into account both discrete-variable and continuous-variable QKD systems to maximize the achievable secret key rate performance in single-fiber bidirectional PONs.
