Mini Review: Synergizing Driven Quantum Dynamics, AI, and Quantum Computing for Next-Gen Materials Science

Opeyemi Samson Akanbi, Jack P. Shannon, Jérôme Delhommelle +1 more

The design of next-gen materials has undergone remarkable progress in recent years, as evidenced by the emergence of automated platforms combining artificial intelligence (AI)-driven synthesis planning and robotics for execution. In this Mini-Review, we analyze how synergistic approaches that combine driven quantum dynamics, AI/machine learning, and quantum computing accelerate the discovery and design process of quantum materials with enhanced properties and novel functionalities. Building on the capabilities of each of the three methods, synergistic approaches can provide access to the materials' response to time-dependent fields, enable the rapid exploration of vast design spaces, and identify novel quantum phases and materials with optimal properties. We examine recent successes in next-gen materials science for quantum batteries, colloidal quantum dots solar cells, quantum phototransistors, rare-earth-free materials, and applications in quantum information processing. We conclude with a discussion of recent research efforts in AI-for-quantum computing and quantum machine learning for next-gen materials discovery.

Enhancing the optical communication telescope laboratory to support quantum communications between earth and space

Alexander Lohrmann, Ioana Craiciu, Kittrin T. Matthews +7 more

We report on the design and development of a quantum backend for an optical ground station for space-based quantum communication and science experiments. The quantum backend will enable the Optical Communication Telescope Laboratory (OCTL) to establish links with quantum satellites in the future. We aim to test this quantum enabled ground station with upcoming satellite Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) missions. We present measurements of the ground station properties that are relevant for future quantum links. Specifically, we discuss the polarization disturbance imposed by the optical communication telescope and present mitigation strategies in the form of polarization control systems. In addition to the optical design, we also present an end-to-end QKD model that is used to guide the development.

Multiple-Valued Quantum Computing

Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu

The ability of a quantum computer to solve traditional NP problems in polynomial time has drawn a lot of attention. Quantum computing originated from the ideas of classical information theory, computer science, mathematics, and quantum physics. In the context of quantum computing, this chapter provides an overview of ternary logic (multiple-valued logic) in quantum computing. Knowledge of quantum principles transformed the conceptualization of the atom, which consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons. Early models depicted electrons as particles that orbited the nucleus, much like the way satellites orbit Earth. Any science concerned with systems that display noticeable quantum-mechanical effects, where waves have particle qualities and particles behave like waves, is referred to as quantum physics. Quantum mechanics has applications in both explaining natural events and designing technology that relies on quantum effects, such as integrated circuits and lasers.
