Abstract

In this article, we obtain the multistable macroscopic quantum states and quantum tricritical behavior in generalized Dicke model (DM) analytically by means of spin-coherent-state (SCS) variational method for a finite atom number N. The quantum phase transition (QPT) is characterized by the ground state from the normal phase (NP) to the superradiant phases (SP). The second-order QPT turns to the first-order one at the tricritical point of phase boundary. The tricritical behavior of QPT emerges when the coupling strength of the symmetry breaking mechanism increases to a certain extent, which leads to an additional dimension of phase diagram. Beyond the ground state the symmetry-breaking coupling can manipulate the pseudospin flip of higher-level macroscopic states. The critical property of QPT is also demonstrated from the average photon-number, the atomic population as well as Berry phase.

First-Order Quantum Phase Transition for Dicke Model Induced by Atom-Atom Interaction*

Xiuqin Zhao, Ni Liu, Liang Jiu-Qing

Abstract In this article, we use the spin coherent state transformation and the ground state variational method to theoretically calculate the ground function. In order to consider the influence of the atom-atom interaction on the extended Dicke model’s ground state properties, the mean photon number, the scaled atomic population and the average ground energy are displayed. Using the self-consistent field theory to solve the atom-atom interaction, we discover the system undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition from the normal phase to the superradiant phase, but a famous Dicke-type second-order quantum phase transition without the atom-atom interaction. Meanwhile, the atom-atom interaction makes the phase transition point shift to the lower atom-photon collective coupling strength.

Quantum phase transition and exceptional points of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for cold atoms in a dissipative optical cavity with nonlinear atom-photon interactions

Yunqing Luo, Ni Liu, J.-Q. Liang

We investigate in this paper the macroscopic quantum states of multiple atoms in an optical cavity with non-Hermitian coupling motivated by recent experiments. The tunable atom-photon nonlinear interaction is included to demonstrate the variety of quantum phases in the realistic realization of Dicke phase transition with cold atoms. The energies of macroscopic quantum states are obtained in terms of the spin-coherent-state variational method, in which the nonunitary operator of the similarity transformation is used to diagonalize the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which is pseudo-Hermitian below the exceptional point (EP). The superradiant phase (SP) and related quantum phase transition (QPT) disappear completely for the non-Hermitian Dicke model (DM) because of imaginary coupling, which leads to instability of states with nonzero photons. The situation is dramatically changed by including the nonlinear atom-photon interaction generated by the pump field. It is found that the second EP emerges at a higher value of coupling. The spectrum is complex between the two EPs and real otherwise. Phase diagrams are obtained for red and blue cavity pump field detunings, showing explicitly the revival of the SP and QPT, respectively. However, the QPT from the SP to the normal phase with the increase of coupling is opposite to the transition in the normal DM. The critical property of the Berry phase indicates the first-order nature of the QPT, which again is different from the DM, where the QPT is known as the second order.

Quantum criticality of the ferromagnetic Dicke-Ising model

Jan Alexander Koziol

We describe the quantum phase transitions in the ferromagnetic Dicke-Ising model using a Landau theory approach. The theory quantitatively captures the change from a second- to a first-order transition between the normal and superradiant phases through a tricritical point. We identify virtual nearest-neighbor double spin-flip processes as the crucial mechanism responsible for this behavior. The tricritical point constitutes a quantum phase transition above the upper critical dimension. We discuss the modifications to finite-size scaling required for the correct interpretation of numerical data at the tricritical point. Our results emphasize the need for adapted finite-size scaling forms in all-to-all interacting quantum systems and establish the ferromagnetic Dicke-Ising model as a paradigmatic platform for quantum phase transitions above the upper critical dimension, encompassing both standard $φ^4$ criticality and beyond.

Quantum Phase Transitions in a Generalized Dicke Model

Wen Liu, Liwei Duan

We investigate a generalized Dicke model by introducing two interacting spin ensembles coupled with a single-mode bosonic field. Apart from the normal to superradiant phase transition induced by the strong spin-boson coupling, interactions between the two spin ensembles enrich the phase diagram by introducing ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. The mean-field approach reveals a phase diagram comprising three phases: paramagnetic-normal phase, ferromagnetic-superradiant phase, and antiferromagnetic-normal phase. Ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can significantly reduce the required spin-boson coupling strength to observe the superradiant phase, where the macroscopic excitation of the bosonic field occurs. Conversely, antiferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can strongly suppress the superradiant phase. To examine higher-order quantum effects beyond the mean-field contribution, we utilize the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, which converts the generalized Dicke model into three coupled harmonic oscillators in the thermodynamic limit. Near the critical point, we observe the close of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited states, the divergence of entanglement entropy and quantum fluctuation in certain quadrature. These observations further confirm the quantum phase transition and offer additional insights into critical behaviors.

Macroscopic Quantum States and Quantum Phase Transition in the Dicke Model

Jin-Ling Lian, Yuan-Wei Zhang, Jiu-Qing Liang

The energy spectrum of Dicke Hamiltonians with and without the rotating wave approximation for an arbitrary atom number is obtained analytically by means of the variational method, in which the effective pseudo-spin Hamiltonian resulting from the expectation value in the boson-field coherent state is diagonalized by the spin-coherent-state transformation. In addition to the ground-state energy, an excited macroscopic quantum-state is found corresponding to the south- and north-pole gauges of the spin-coherent states, respectively. Our results of ground-state energies in exact agreement with various approaches show that these models exhibit a zero-temperature quantum phase transition of the second order for any number of atoms, which was commonly considered as a phenomenon of the thermodynamic limit with the atom number tending to infinity. The critical behavior of the geometric phase is analyzed.

Quantum tricriticality in a generalized quantum Rabi system

You-Qi Lu, Yuyu Zhang

Abstract Quantum tricriticality, a unique form of high-order criticality, is expected to exhibit fascinating features including unconventional critical exponents and universal scaling laws. However, a quantum tricritical point (QTCP) is much harder to access, and the corresponding phenomena at tricriticality have rarely been investigated. In this study, we explore a tricritical quantum Rabi model, which incorporates a non-trivial parameter to adjust the coupling ratio between a cavity and a three-level atom. The QTCP emerges at the intersection of first- and second-order superradiant phase transitions according to Landau theory. By using finite-frequency scaling analysis on quantum fluctuations and the average photon number, universal critical exponents differentiate the QTCP from the second-order critical point. Our results indicate that the phase transition at the tricritical point goes beyond the conventional second-order phase transition. Our work explores an interesting direction in the generalization of the well-known Rabi model for the study of higher-order critical points due to its high control and tunability.
