Lieb-Schultz-Mattis anomalies and web of dualities induced by gauging in quantum spin chains

Ömer M. Aksoy, Christopher Mudry, Akira Furusaki +1 more

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems impose non-perturbative constraints on the zero-temperature phase diagrams of quantum lattice Hamiltonians (always assumed to be local in this paper). LSM theorems have recently been interpreted as the lattice counterparts to mixed ’t Hooft anomalies in quantum field theories that arise from a combination of crystalline and global internal symmetry groups. Accordingly, LSM theorems have been reinterpreted as LSM anomalies. In this work, we provide a systematic diagnostic for LSM anomalies in one spatial dimension. We show that gauging subgroups of the global internal symmetry group of a quantum lattice model obeying an LSM anomaly delivers a dual quantum lattice Hamiltonian such that its internal and crystalline symmetries mix non-trivially through a group extension. This mixing of crystalline and internal symmetries after gauging is a direct consequence of the LSM anomaly, i.e., it can be used as a diagnostic of an LSM anomaly. We exemplify this procedure for a quantum spin-1/2 chain obeying an LSM anomaly resulting from combining a global internal \mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}×\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2} ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 symmetry with translation or reflection symmetry. We establish a triality of models by gauging a \mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\subset\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}×\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2} ℤ 2 ⊂ ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 symmetry in two ways, one of which amounts to performing a Kramers-Wannier duality, while the other implements a Jordan-Wigner duality. We discuss the mapping of the phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 XYZ X Y Z chains under such a triality. We show that the deconfined quantum critical transitions between Neel and dimer orders are mapped to either topological or conventional Landau-Ginzburg transitions. Finally, we extend our results to \mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n} ℤ n clock models with \mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n}×\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n} ℤ n × ℤ n global internal symmetry, and provide a reinterpretation of the dual internal symmetries in terms of \mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n} ℤ n charge and dipole symmetries.

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Anomalies and Anomaly Matching

Liujun Zou, Meng Cheng

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) anomalies are powerful symmetry-based constraints on the correlation, entanglement and dynamics of quantum many-body systems. In this review, we discuss various LSM anomalies and anomaly matching. We start with a pedagogical introduction to these subjects in quantum spin chains, and then generalize the discussion to higher dimensions and other systems. Besides covering the topics related to the standard LSM anomalies, we also review LSM anomalies in disordered systems where the lattice symmetries are only preserved on average, fermionic systems, and systems where the symmetric short-range entangled states are possible but must be nontrivial symmetry-protected topological phases.

Validity of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem in Long-Range Interacting Systems

Yi-Neng Zhou, Xingyu Li

The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem asserts that microscopic details of the system can impose non-trivial constraints on the system's low-energy properties. While traditionally applied to short-range interaction systems, where locality ensures a vanishing spectral gap in large system size limit, the impact of long-range interactions on the LSM theorem remains an open question. Long-range interactions are prevalent in experimental platforms such as Rydberg atoms, dipolar quantum gases, polar molecules, optical cavities, and trapped ions, where the interaction decay exponent can be experimentally tuned. We extend the LSM theorem in one dimension to long-range interacting systems and find that the LSM theorem holds for exponentially or power-law two-body interactions with a decay exponent $α> 2$. However, for power-law interactions with $α< 2$, the constraints of the LSM theorem on the ground state do not apply. Numerical simulations of long-range versions of the Heisenberg and Majumdar-Ghosh models, both satisfying the LSM symmetry requirements, are also provided. Our results suggest promising directions for experimental validation of the LSM theorem in systems with tunable long-range interactions.
