Quantum Coherence in Ultrafast Semiconductor Spectroscopy

H. Haug

Coherent optical phenomena such as the optical Stark effect, Rabi flopping, photon echo and quantum beating which are well-known in atomic spectroscopy can also be observed in semiconductors by using femtosecond laser pulses. On these short time scales, the quantum coherence of the optical excitations in the solid do not only influence the optical properties but change at the same time the relaxation and dephasing kinetics. The quasi-classical Boltzmann kinetics has to be replaced by quantum kinetics. Coherence leads to the appearance of memory in the scattering integrals. For femtosecond four-wave mixing and pump-and-probe spectroscopy the use of quantum kinetics for LO-phonon and for carrier-carrier scattering will be reviewed.

The International Conference on Nonlinear Optics and Excitation Kinetics in Semiconductors (NOEKS) is the 12th meeting in a series with an excellent tradition in bringing together leading scientists in the field of semiconductor optics. NOEKS 12 stands in this tradition by covering the most recent developments in this rapidly evolving field, which involve new materials, novel experimental techniques, and fruitful collaborations between theorists and experimentalists. There will be no parallel sessions, and the conference will provide plenty of opportunities for discussions.

Quantum-optical radiation laws for confined semiconductors systems

Felix Richter, Klaus Henneberger

We present a quantum-kinetically exact theoretical framework for the propagation, emission and scattering of light in bounded media in the context of semiconductor optics. The theory is based on the nonequilibrium photon Green's functions. Its advantage is that the spatial inhomogeneity inherent to bounded media and, hence, to many semiconductor optics problems, is fully and exactly considered. The electromagnetic properties of media are treated microscopically rather than in an effective approximation, and media may be arbitrarily dispersive and absorptive. Relations for the propagation of quantized (squeezed) light as well as for the energy transport of incident and emitted light are given and discussed.
