Abstract

Physical layer secret key generation is a promising candidate to achieve one-time-pad encryption approach for the wireless communication system. However, in a static environment, the secret key rate is low due to the lack of channel time-variation. To solve this problem, this letter proposes a novel secret key generation scheme assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface with discrete phase shifts. In the scheme, legitimate nodes construct the dynamic time-varying channel by rapidly and randomly switching the phase of IRS elements. Then, channel coefficients are used to generate the secret key. Based on the IRS channel model, we derive the probability distribution of the channel coefficient and the expressions of the secret key rate. Furthermore, we optimize the secret key rate by adjusting the switching time of the IRS phase. Monte Carlo simulation and numerical results show that our proposed scheme can update the secret key in a static environment.

Secret Key Generation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Wireless Communication Networks with Multiple Eavesdroppers

Ya Liu, Kaizhi Huang, Shaochuan Yang +2 more

Physical layer secret key generation (SKG) is a promising supplement for high-level encryption, which leverages the channel reciprocity and the natural randomness of wireless channel. However, practical implementations often exhibit static environment. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel secret key generation scheme assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) which can smartly reconfigure the radio signal propagation to improve the secret key rate of SKG. Specially, we formulate the minimum achievable secret key capacity in the IRS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) system with multiple eavesdroppers. Then, an optimization framework for designing IRS reflecting coefficients based on the secret key capacity lower bound is proposed. Numerical results show that our optimal IRS-assisted SKG scheme can achieve much higher achievable secret key capacity when compared with two benchmark schemes.

Random Shifting Intelligent Reflecting Surface for OTP Encrypted Data Transmission

Zijie Ji, Phee Lep Yeoh, Gaojie Chen +5 more

In this letter, we propose a novel encrypted data transmission scheme using an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to generate secret keys in wireless communication networks. We show that perfectly secure one-time pad (OTP) communications can be established by using a simple random phase shifting of the IRS elements. To maximize the secure transmission rate, we design an optimal time slot allocation algorithm for the IRS secret key generation and the encrypted data transmission phases. Moreover, a theoretical expression of the key generation rate is derived based on Poisson point process (PPP) for the practical scenario when eavesdroppers’ channel state information (CSI) is unavailable. Simulation results show that employing our IRS-based scheme can significantly improve the encrypted data transmission performance for a wide-range of wireless channel gains and system parameters.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Secret Key Generation Under Spatially Correlated Channels in Quasi-Static Environments

Vahid Shahiri, Hamid Behroozi, Ali Kuhestani

Physical layer key generation (PLKG) can significantly enhance the security of classic encryption schemes by enabling them to change their secret keys significantly faster and more efficient. However, due to the reliance of PLKG techniques on channel medium, reaching a high secret key rate is challenging in static environments. Recently, exploiting intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) as a means to induce randomness in static wireless channels has received significant research interest. However, the impact of spatial correlation between the IRS elements is rarely studied. To be specific, for the first time, in this contribution, we take into account a spatially correlated IRS which intends to enhance the secret key generation (SKG) rate in a static medium. Closed form analytical expressions for SKG rate are derived for the two cases of random phase shift and equal random phase shift for all the IRS elements. We also analyze the temporal correlation between the channel samples to ensure the randomness of the generated secret key sequence. We further formulate an optimization problem in which we determine the optimal portion of time within a coherence interval dedicated for the direct and indirect channel estimation. We show the accuracy and the fast convergence of our proposed sequential convex programming (SCP) based algorithm and discuss the various parameters affecting spatially correlated IRS assisted PLKG.

IRS-Assisted Hybrid Secret Key Generation

Meixiang Zhang, Ziyue Zhuang, Sooyoung Kim

Physical layer secret key (SK) generation is known to be an efficient means to achieve high secrecy rate, on the condition that dynamic channel state information (CSI) is provided. For this reason, the secrecy performance is highly degraded in a static environment. The intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising solution to create dynamic randomness, and thus lead to enhanced secrecy performance regardless of the user environments. This paper proposes an IRS-assisted physical layer SK generation scheme, by efficiently combing phase information of the direct and reflected channel information in a hybrid way. In particular, the initial SKs are obtained by adopting efficient phase quantization method with symmetric bit allocation to complex numbered channel estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid phase quantization (PQ) can improve the SK generation rate and the key disagreement probability in a static environment.

Applying Intelligent Reflective Surface to Channel Phase Probing in Wireless Secret Key Generation

Xinjin Lu, Jing Lei, Yuxin Shi +1 more

Abstract Aiming at the problem of secret key generation in the static wireless communication environment, this paper proposes a scheme applying intelligent reflective surface to channel phase probing (IRS-CPP) in wireless secret key generation. Firstly, both legitimate parties utilize OFDM signals for channel probing to obtain the corresponding channel phase response. Secondly, the passive elements in the IRS are used to reflect the probing signal, which can effectively change the signal phases. Finally, the secret key can be obtained after reconciliation and privacy amplification. This scheme makes full use of the reciprocity of the phase response in wireless channels, and applys the IRS elements to change the static environment indirectly. Compared with the existing key generation scheme, the proposed scheme effectively improves the performance of secret key generation in static environments.

Intelligent Reflective Surface-Aided Channel Phase Probing for Physical-Layer Key Generation in Transportation Systems

Xinjin Lu, Yuxin Shi, Zhi Lin +3 more

Focusing on the issue of secret key generation for transportation systems and electronic devices in possible less-dynamic channel conditions, this paper proposes an intelligent reflective surface aided channel phase probing scheme (IRS-CPP) for improving physical layer key generation. Specifically, we consider the model that both legitimate nodes first acquire the secret key from the channel phase response by employing channel probing. Then, the passive IRS are utilized to enhance the probing signal by using random phase shifts, which can effectively modify the signal phases. Furthermore, we provide the performance analysis of the proposed scheme in terms of the theoretical key capacity to estimate performance of the scheme. Finally, comprehensive results including the key capacity, key generation rate (KGR), key inconsistency rate (KIR) and key randomness are investigated. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively enhance the physical layer key generation performance in the static scenario compared with the benchmark key generation schemes.
