Abstract

The generation of squeezed states of light in a two-mode Kerr nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) was investigated using two different methods in quantum mechanics. First, the analytical method, a Heisenberg-picture-based method where the operators are evolving in time but the state vectors are time-independent. In this method, an analytical solution to the coupled Heisenberg equations of motion for the propagating modes was proposed based on the Baker–Hausdorff (BH) formula. Second, the phase space method, a Schrödinger-picture-based method in which the operators are constant and the density matrix evolves in time. In this method, the quantum mechanical master equation of the density matrix was converted to a corresponding classical Fokker–Planck (FP) equation in positive-P representation. Then, the FP equation was converted to a set of stochastic differential equations using Ito rules. The strengths and weaknesses of each method are discussed. Good agreement between both methods was achieved, especially at early evolution stages and lower values of linear coupling coefficient. On one hand, the analytical method seems insensitive to higher values of nonlinear coupling coefficients. Nevertheless, it demonstrated better numerical stability. On the other hand, the solution of the stochastic equations resulting from the phase space method is numerically expensive as it requires averaging over thousands of trajectories. Besides, numerically unstable trajectories appear with positive-P representation at higher values of nonlinearity.

Squeezing in four-mode Kerr nonlinear coupler via phase space representation

Rafael Julius, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, Mohd Salleh Mohd Deni +1 more

Quantum statistical properties of interacting optical fields in Kerr nonlinear coupler can be regarded as one of the most fundamental problems in quantum optics. As the analytical solution to these systems is not always possible, a semi-analytic or direct numerical solution has to be employed to obtain more complete description of their evolution. This paper investigates the quantum properties of a four-mode coupler composed of two Kerr nonlinear waveguides via phase-space representation. In this system, the electromagnetic field is described by its Hamiltonian and the time evolution of the system is described by Von-Neumann equation. Following the standard techniques, the master equation for the density matrix of the system is obtained and converted to the corresponding classical Fokker-Planck equation using both positive-P and Wigner representations. The corresponding set of Langevin Stochastic equations are then obtained from the Fokker-Planck equation using Ito rules. Finally, the system is integrated numerically and averaged over many trajectories to get the relevant information. The dynamics of the mean fields, the effects of self-action nonlinearity, cross-action coupling and initial energy of the coherent light on the evolution of the field quadrature variances are investigated. Further, the influences of multimode interaction on the dynamics of the squeezed states are discussed. We show that the system can produce squeezed states in both quadrature variances for all calculated parameters. In addition, the multimode interaction extends the range of squeezing at the expense of its amplitude.

Quantum properties of kerr nonlinear directional couplers via phase-space representation / Rafael Julius

Quantum statistical properties of interacting optical fields in Kerr nonlinear couplers may be regarded as one of the most fundamental problems yet to be solved in quantum optics. As an analytical solution to this system is not always possible, a semi-analytic or direct numerical solution must be employed in order to obtain a more complete description of their evolution. This study investigates the quantum properties of four-mode couplers composed of two and four Kerr nonlinear waveguides, both with and without cavity set up via phase space representation. In these systems, the electromagnetic fields are described by their Hamiltonians, while the time-evolution of the systems are described by the Von-Neumann equation. Following standard techniques, the master equations for the density matrices of the systems are obtained and further converted to the corresponding classical Fokker- Planck equations using both positive P and Wigner representations. The effects of self-action nonlinearity, cross-action coupling and the initial energy of the coherent light on the evolution of the field quadrature variances are investigated. Furthermore, the influences of multimode interaction on the dynamics of the squeezed states are discussed. In this research, we show that the system may produce squeezed states in both quadrature variances for all calculated parameters. The multimode two channel model can provide better squeezing in contrast to the conventional device. The amplitude oscillation of maximal squeezing may be amplified by manipulation of the initial state of the coherent light in the first mode, and the range may be extended through multimode interaction. When the model is contained in a cavity, the system is able to generate better amplitude oscillations and squeezing range with leaf-revival-collapse-like behaviour; with the whole oscillation able to evolute below the standard quantum limit Regular photon transition and self trapping effects of the interacting modes in the four channels model are simulated, and squeezing is predicted for various initial intensities of the coherent field and nonlinear coupling parameter g. The cavity setup caused the system to undergo fluctuation amplification and the potential for different types of squeezing to be generated is observed. Depending on how we choose the interaction parameter values, the system may generate better squeezing in comparison to the cavity-less model.

Quantum state generation in a four-mode Kerr nonlinear directional coupler

Rafael Julius, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, Mohd Salleh Mohd Deni

The quantum effects in a four-mode Kerr nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) are investigated using the phase-space representation. The four-mode Kerr NLDC device consists of two closely connected Kerr waveguides where the first channel is traversed by one mode while the second channel is traversed by three modes. The cavity effect on the propagation characteristics of the nonclassical light is also examined. The introduction of a cavity supports amplification of the nonlinearities at the expense of losses in the model. The dynamical quantum behaviour of the system is investigated by integrating the Langevin equations derived in both positive P and Wigner representations numerically. The characteristics of the mean fields and quadrature variances are explored by integrating the stochastic equations numerically over many trajectories. In comparison with a conventional two-mode device, we have found that the cavityless model provides better squeezing and the amplitude oscillation is amplified by controlling the initial state of the coherent light in the first channel. Moreover, the range of squeezing is extended as a result of multimode interaction. In addition, confining the system inside an optical cavity with highly reflective mirrors introduces rapid amplification in the oscillation of the field dynamics.

Quantum antibunching in nonlinear couplers: a phase space approach using the positive P-representation

Mohd Syafiq M. Hanapi, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, Rafael Julius +1 more

Quantum antibunching, vital for single-photon sources, enables applications in quantum technology, such as secure communication and quantum computing. This study investigates photon antibunching generation in a Nonlinear coupler (NLC) comprising two coupled waveguides: one linear and one with the second-order nonlinearity. Each waveguide is excited by a coherent laser source, with the second harmonic generation enhancing antibunching. Using the Schrödinger picture, the system's Hamiltonian is transformed into a master equation via the Liouville–von Neumann equation. The master equation is further translated into a Fokker–Planck equation using the positive-P representation and subsequently mapped to stochastic differential equations via Ito rules for numerical analysis. The effects of input parameters on antibunching behavior are examined, showcasing the potential of simple systems like NLCs for precise single-photon manipulation, advancing quantum technology.

Quantum features of nonlinear coupler with competing nonlinearity

Rafael Julius, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, P. K. Choudhury +2 more

Abstract In this work, we examine the quantum features of a multi-waveguide nonlinear coupler exploiting the second-and third-order nonlinearities. The considered system contains four identical channels, each with a single fundamental transverse mode. The essence of this type of nonlinear coupler is to examine the effect of two or more competing nonlinearities on the generated nonclassical features in this class of devices. Here, we consider the case of second harmonic generation, wherein the fundamental harmonic (FH) fields are up-converted in pairs to double-frequency second harmonic (SH) fields, which are then evanescently coupled with the fields from other Kerr nonlinear waveguides. Using the positive P representation of the phase space, the time-evolution of the density matrix could be mapped to the corresponding Fokker–Planck equation of a classical quasiprobability distribution. Using Langevin stochastic equation, an exact representation of the system in phase space led to the demonstration of sub-Poissonian property, squeezing, and entanglement. With more effective squeezing achieved in all channel waveguides, the present system with χ(2)–χ(3) interaction can be a more efficient alternative to other versions of nonlinear couplers such as the quantum optical dimer (QOD) and Kerr nonlinear coupler (KNC). Furthermore, such a structure offers more flexibility in coupled-mode interactions in the form of correlation between the modes in different waveguides. This provides a better mechanism for the generation of enhanced nonclassical effects.

Nonclassical light in a three-waveguide coupler with second-order nonlinearity

Mohd Syafiq M. Hanapi, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, Rafael Julius +2 more

Possible squeezed states generated in a three-waveguide nonlinear coupler operating with second harmonic generation is discussed. This study is carried out using two well-known techniques; the phase space method (based on positive-P representation) and the Heisenberg-based analytical perturbative (AP) method. The effects of key design parameters were investigated under various conditions, including full frequency matching, symmetrical and asymmetrical waveguide initialization, and both codirectional and contr-adirectional propagation. The system consistently produced long-lasting oscillatory squeezed states across all three waveguides, even when only one waveguide was pumped with coherent light while the others were in a vacuum state. Also, the performance and capacities of both methods are critically evaluated. For low levels of key design parameters and in the early stages of evolution, a high level of agreement between the two methods is noticed. In the new era of quantum-based technology, the proposed system opens a new avenue for utilising nonlinear couplers in nonclassical light generation.
