Generalized Weyl Quantization and Time

Abstract

This work presents quantization of time of arrival functions using generalized Stratonovich-Weyl quantization. We take into account the ordering problems involved, mainly the Born-Jordan and the symmetric ordering schemes. We call attention to the combination of the group theoretic methods usually employed in Weyl quantization with the implementation of different ordering schemes via integral kernel factors. It is possible to, and we do, apply the Pegg-Barnett method to the quantization of time to address physical issues such as boundedness and self-adjointness.

Born-Jordan quantization of classical time of arrival

John Jaykel P. Magadan, Eric A. Galapon

Born-Jordan quantization is used to obtain the time of arrival operator for the generalized potential. Specifically, the time kernel for the harmonic oscillator potential is calculated and the corresponding eigenfunction and eigenvalues are obtained. One of the eigenfunctions is made to evolve through time using the Schroedinger's equation. The time evolution of the wave function leads to its collapse on the arrival point at the time of arrival. This implies that Born - Jordan quantization gives a legitimate time of arrival operator for harmonic potential.

Is Born-Jordan Really the Universal Path Integral Quantization Rule?

John Edward Gough

Abstract It has been argued that the Feynman path integral formalism leads to a quantization rule, and that this is the Born–Jordan rule which gives the unique quantization rule consistent with the correct short-time propagator behavior of the propagator for nonrelativistic systems. We examine this short-time approximation and conclude, contrary to prevailing views, that the asymptotic expansion applies only to Hamiltonian functions that are at most quadratic in the momentum and with constant mass. While the Born–Jordan rule suggests the appropriate quantization of functions in this class, there are other rules which give the same answer, most notably the Weyl quantization scheme.

Born–Jordan quantization and the uncertainty principle

Maurice A. de Gosson

The Weyl correspondence and the related Wigner formalism lie at the core of traditional quantum mechanics. We discuss here an alternative quantization scheme, the idea of which goes back to Born and Jordan, and which has recently been revived in another context, namely time–frequency analysis. We show in particular that the uncertainty principle does not enjoy full symplectic covariance properties in the Born and Jordan scheme, as opposed to what happens in the Weyl quantization.

Quantization of time of arrival functions via harmonic analysis on the Euclidean motion group on the plane

Daisy A. Romeo, Job A. Nable

This work presents a generalized Weyl quantization for the time of arrival function for a system consisting of a free particle confined to move on a line segment. The generalized Weyl quantization relies crucially on the phase space of the classical system being quantized and on the choice of the group of symmetries of this space, which is non-unique.The Hilbert space of the corresponding quantum system is the representation Hilbert space of the unitary irreducible representations of the symmetry group. For the system considered here, the phase space of our time of arrival function is the cylinder × ℝ and the symmetry group (2) is the Euclidean motion group of the plane. We consider two coordinate systems leading to two distinct quantization.

Time of arrival operator on the circle. (Variations on two Mielnik's works)

Maciej Przanowski, Marcin Skulimowski, Jaromir Tosiek

Using the orthodox Weyl -- Wigner -- Stratonovich -- Cohen (WWSC) quantization rule we construct a time -- of -- arrival operator for a free particle on the circle. It is shown that this operator is self -- adjoint but the careful analysis of its properties suggests that it cannot represent a `physical' time -- of -- arrival observable. The problem of a time -- of -- arrival observable for the `waiting screen' is also considered. A method of avoiding the quantum Zeno effect is proposed and the positive operator valued measure (POV -- measure) or the generalized positive operator valued measure (GPOV -- measure) describing quantum time -- of -- arrival observable for the waiting screen are found.

Weyl-Underhill-Emmrich quantization and the Stratonovich-Weyl quantizer

Jerzy F Plebanski, Maciej Przanowski, Francisco J. Turrubiates

Weyl-Underhill-Emmrich (WUE) quantization and its generalization are considered. It is shown that an axiomatic definition of the Stratonovich-Weyl quantizer leads to severe difficulties. Quantization on the cylinder within the WUE formalism is discussed.
