Engineering an ideal indistinguishable photon-pair source for optical quantum information processing

Radhika Rangarajan, Luis Edgar Vicent, Alfred B. U’Ren +1 more

The eventual success of optical quantum information (QI) processing depends critically on the available technologies. Photons produced via the nonlinear process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) have now been used in a vast array of experiments in optical quantum computing and long-distance quantum communication. However, almost no source to date has been fully optimized. Here, we describe our progress in engineering an ideal photon-pair source for optical quantum information processing – polarization-entangled photons made indistinguishable by engineering spatio-spectral unentanglement at the source. We present solutions for several key challenges encountered in the development of the indistinguishable source. We expect such a source to directly translate into significantly enhanced QI protocols with higher rates, fidelities and efficiencies.

Quantum information optics and its recent progress: the preparation of quantum states

Jianping Yin, Wenbao Wang

In this paper, we first introduce the definition of quantum information optics and expound the essential distinction between quantum and classical information optics. Secondly, the five great subjects on the research of quantum information optics are summarized. Finally, the recent experimental progress on the preparation (or generation) of quantum states (or quantum information) in some semiconductor devices and materials are introduced and reviewed in detail.

Quantum information science in the optics curriculum

Bahaa E. A. Saleh

Optics is an essential backbone of quantum information science (QIS). Infusing QIS in the optics curriculum is much needed, but challenging. We report an approach transitioning from classical matrix optics to qubits and quantum gates.
