Vortex dynamics in cubic-quintic Bose-Einstein condensates

Thudiyangal Mithun, Kuppuswamy Porsezian, Bishwajyoti Dey

We study vortex dynamics in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable two- and three-body interactions. The dynamics is governed by two-dimensional cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A time-dependent variational method has been used to obtain critical rotational frequency and surface mode frequency analytically and are compared with numerical simulation results. An imaginary time propagation method and Crank-Nicolson scheme for discretization have been used for numerical simulation. The numerically calculated average value of the angular momentum per particle shows very clearly its dynamical relation with the time development of the vortex formation. The rotational frequency dependence of the variation of average value of the angular momentum per particle with time shows that vortices form much faster in time for higher rotational frequency. Similarly, the vortex forms much faster in time with an increase of the strength of the repulsive three-body interaction. The simulation of the vortex lattice formation in the condensate shows that the presence of the three-body interactions does not alter the vortex lattice pattern but it helps in the shape deformations of the condensate thereby leading to vortex lattice formation. Likewise, the three-body interactions enable the vortex lattice formation in Bose-Einstein condensates even with attractive two-body interactions and in purely quintic BEC.

Vortex structures formed by the interference of sliced condensates

R. Carretero-González, N. Whitaker, P. G. Kevrekidis +1 more

We study the formation of vortices, vortex necklaces, and vortex ring structures as a result of the interference of higher-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). This study is motivated by earlier theoretical results pertaining to the formation of dark solitons by interfering quasi-one-dimensional BECs, as well as recent experiments demonstrating the formation of vortices by interfering higher-dimensional BECs. Here, we demonstrate the genericness of the relevant scenario, but also highlight a number of additional possibilities emerging in higher-dimensional settings. A relevant example is, e.g., the formation of a ``cage'' of vortex rings surrounding the three-dimensional bulk of the condensed atoms. The effects of the relative phases of the different BEC fragments and the role of damping due to coupling with the thermal cloud are also discussed. Our predictions should be immediately tractable in currently existing experimental BEC setups.

Sonic black hole horizon formation for Bose-Einstein condensates with higher-order nonlinear effects

Yang Yang, Ying Wang, Zhao Li +3 more

We study sonic horizon formation dynamics for Bose-Einstein condensate systems with higher-order nonlinear interaction. Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation incorporating higher-order nonlinear effects and through a variational method, we derived the criteria formula for sonic horizon occurrence. The key features of the sonic horizon are pictorially demonstrated, and we identified the stabilization and widening metastable effects of the higher-order nonlinear interaction, from which the quantitative results can be used to guide relevant experimental observations of sonic black holes with higher-order nonlinear effects.
