Abstract

In this paper, we calculate the radiation force on a two-level atom, whose levels are modulated by two far off resonance travelling wave fields, interacting with a near resonance travelling wave field. The results show that with appropriate conditions, the force can be much larger than spontaneous radiation force and then can be used in laser cooling with high efficiency.

Radiation pressure and laser cooling of a three-level atom in a ladder configuration

Radiation pressure and laser cooling of a moving three-level ladder-type atom in bichromatic travelling fields are considered. The dependence of the force on parameters such as detunings, Rabi frequencies and spontaneous decay rates is calculated numerically and shown graphically and analytical expressions for the force are obtained for some special parameter values. It is shown that the radiation pressure shows Doppler-shifted resonance peaks resulting respectively from one-photon and two-photon transitions. Using the present scheme, Doppler cooling of sodium exploiting the 3 2 S 1/2 –3 2 P 3/2 –3 2 D 5/2 cascade transitions is investigated. It is found that temperatures lower than the Doppler limit can be achieved.

Dipole force cooling of multilevel atoms

A theoretical discussion of laser cooling of multilevel atomic systems using intense, blue detuned laser beams is given. A method based on matrix continued fractions is presented, which enables the efficient calculation of the semi-classical force on a multilevel system. The method is applied to a three-level system driven by one standing wave and one travelling wave. The force curves obtained exhibit strong cooling features. Cooling of the three-level system is simulated using the fully quantum mechanical Monte Carlo wave function technique. The simulation predicts efficient cooling to sub-Doppler temperatures. The three-level model is related to a multilevel cooling experiment performed on $\\sp7$Li. The experimental results are found to be in reasonable agreement with the three-level model. However, a comparison of the simulation and experiment for a two-level atomic system reveals significant discrepancies, which raises questions about the model and experiment.

Laser cooling in a squeezed vacuum

In this paper, the use of squeezed light in laser cooling is investigated. We find that in a traveling-wave laser field, a two-level atom in a squeezed vacuum cannot be cooled to a lower temperature than in normal vacuum. For a two-level atom in a standing-wave laser field, if it is tuned from the resonant region, the conclusion is the same as in the traveling-wave case. However, near the resonant region, the atom in a standing-wave field can achieve a lower temperature than Doppler limit.

Radiation force on a moving atomin a bichromatical laser field

The radiation force on a moving atom in a bichromatical travelling field is investigated in this paper. The relation of the atomic stimulated transition rate and the radiation force on the atom with its velocity in a bichromatical travelling wave is obtained by numberical calculation. Compared with that in a monochromatical travelling or a standing wave, the result in the bichromatical field have its own character, which is useful in the investigation of laser cooling of neutral atoms, selection of atomic velocity and atomic mometum diffusion.

Calculations on cooling of fast, multilevel atoms by intense laser fields

As a theoretical background for an ongoing experiment on longitudinal cooling of an energetic atomic beam by an intense laser field, we generalize the dressed-atom description of the atom–laser interaction from a two-level to a multilevel system. Expressions are presented for the average force on the atom, in particular in the limits of high and low velocities with respect to a standing wave, and the influence of fluctuations is studied through a Monte Carlo simulation. Appreciable cooling is predicted for a beam of 200-eV neon atoms traversing a 75-cm-long resonator in which the energy density is maintained by two 0.5-W cw lasers.
