Abstract

Various slow light schemes are analyzed to determine power dissipation per stored bit. It is shown that required dissipated power increases quite nonlinearly reaching unsustainably high values for the storage capacities needed for optical buffers.

Power dissipation in slow light devices: a comparative analysis

The performance of various slow light schemes is analyzed from the point of view of power dissipation per stored bit. It is shown that the dissipated power increases quite nonlinearly with storage capacity, and that the schemes based on low-loss photonic structures with distributed amplifiers hold indisputable advantage over other schemes.

Optically-Amplified Slow Light Buffers for High-Capacity Optical Routers

We review the power dissipation and scaling properties of a number of different realizations of optically-amplified slow light optical buffers. Based on a new analysis of slow light buffering, we show the conditions under which optical buffers may offer advantages over CMOS DRAM buffers in high-capacity optical routers.

We analyze the link performance of an optical buffer using slow light as the delay mechanism. A power penalty of a few dBm is found for a 40 Gb/s link. We show the existence of a bandwidth-storage product trade-off.
