Abstract

The newly developed iterative method based on Green function defined by quadratures along a single trajectory is combined with the variational method to solve the ground state quantum wave function for central potentials. As an example, the method is applied to discuss the ground state solution of Yukawa potential, using Hulthen solution as the trial function.

Revised Iterative Solution of Ground State of Double-Well Potential

ZHAOWei-Qin

The revised new iterative method for solving the ground state of Schrodinger equation is deduced. Based on Green functions defined by quadratures along a single trajectory this iterative method is applied to solve the ground state of the double-well potential. The result is compared to the one based on the original iterative method. The limitation of the asymptotic expansion is also discussed.

Simple numerical approach to quantum lattice models

Eduardo R. Gagliano, Silvia B. Bacci

The purpose of this paper is to present some simple variants of a recently developed iterative algorithm for improvement of any given trial wave function. These modifications improve the convergence rate of the iterative process and allow us to obtain a good variational state for larger lattices. We apply the method to the one-dimensional Gross-Neveu model with one flavor in a finite-size lattice. The ground-state energy, the density-density correlation function, and the single-particle Green's function are calculated. They are in good agreement with existing results.

The variational method applied to the harmonic oscillator in the presence of a delta function potential

Indrajit Ghose, Parongama Sen

Abstract The problem of the harmonic oscillator with a centrally located delta function potential can be exactly solved in one dimension, where the eigenfunctions are expressed as superpositions of the Hermite polynomials or as confluent hypergeometric functions in general. The eigenfunctions obtained exactly are difficult to visualise and hence, to gain more insight, one can attempt to use model wave functions which are explicitly and simply expressed. Here, we apply the variational method to verify how closely one can approach the exact ground state eigenvalues using such trial wave functions. We obtain the estimates of the ground state energies, which are closer to the exact values in comparison to earlier approximate results for both the repulsive and attractive delta potentials.

Systematic Convergence in Applying Variational Method to Double-Well Potential.

Wai‐Ning Mei

In this work, we demonstrate the application of the variational method by computing the ground- and first-excited state energies of a double-well potential. We start with the proper choice of the trial wave functions using optimized parameters, and notice that accurate expectation values in excellent agreement with the numerical results can be aquired by cautious systematic improvement of trial wave functions.

Demonstration of systematic im provements in application of the variational method to weakly bound potentials

W. N. Mei

In applying the variational method, we demonstrate that, with careful study of the general features of the trial wave functions, we can achieve systematic improvements in calculating the eigenvalues of quantum mechanical systems. We apply five different sets of trial wave functions to calculate the ground state and first excited state energies of weakly bound potentials, such as V(x) = ∣x∣, √∣x∣ and ln (∣x∣). We demonstrate that accurate results can be obtained through a thorough understanding of the asymptotic behaviours. With proper adjustments, we show how to improve trial wave functions. Finally, by calculating to the fifth excited states, we compare the exact and variational results with those obtained from the semi-classical method, and discuss the merits of the different approaches.
