Abstract

The one-dimensional mirror structure photonic crystals, and when the quantum wave equation of photon was applied to one-dimensional photonic crystals were studied by quantum theory method. it could be obtained the quantum transfer matrix, the quantum transmissivity and the quantum reflectivity. The effects of the defect layer number, absorbing and active medium on the quantum transmission properties was studied, which can help to design optical filter, amplifier and attenuator. When the defect layer is inserted, the defect model appears sharp peak. With the addition of defect layer number, the number of defect model increases, and the optic filter of multiple channel can be designed. When adding absorbing medium in the defect layer, the defect model intensity becomes weaken. when adding active medium in the defect layer, the defect model intensity becomes enhanced,so the optic amplifier and attenuator can be designed.

The transmittance of defect mode in one dimension photonic crystals with nonlinear absorptional dielectric materials was deduced by the transfer matrix theory. The intensity enhancement factor of localized light in defect layer had also been obtained, which increases exponentially with the number of layers in a photonic crystal. The numerical calculation shows that a photonic crystal with saturable absorption dielectric materials in the defect layer has the property of bistablility. The threshold of input intensity to bring about bistablility is decided by parameters of refractivity?saturation intensity of defect layer and decreases exponentially with the number of layers in a photonic crystal.

Three-dimensional control of the light propagation in a defect photonic crystal

J Bravo A, A P Aslla Q, Yersi-Luis Huamán-Romaní +2 more

Abstract In this paper, we have proposed a new model for controlling the light propagation in a defect photonic crystal structure with a dispersive defect layer. The defect layer consists of a four-level quantum wells interacts by two optical vortex lights. Here, a weak signal light can be generated due to the four-wave mixing mechanism, and this led to phase dependent of the medium. By intensity modulations of the applied lights, we study the 3D properties of the transmitted, reflected and absorption spectrums of the incident light from defect photonic crystal. We have shown that via azimuthal modulations of the optical vortex light the incident light can be absorbed or amplified easily.

We have proved the inevitability of the existence of localized field with a defect mode as well as its basic properties with the help of the theory of spontaneous emission from two-level atoms in photonic crystals, which provide a theoretical proof for studying the inherent laws of spontaneous radiation from the doped medium in the paper. On this basis, the inherent laws between the characteristics of localized field, the enhancement of stimulated emission, the phenomenon of transmissivity greater than 1,the abnormality of the group velocity close to the edge of photonic band gap and the negative imaginary component of the complex active refractive index of doped layers in one-dimensional photonic crystals with active impurities or without active impurities were studied by using the method of numerical simulation, which illustrated that the complex active refractive index has a negative imaginary component, and that the dope modes with very high quality factors and great mode density will occur in the photonic forbidden band if an active impurity is introduced into the defect medium in the photonic crystals. Therefore, the enhancement of spontaneous emission can be realized, and the amplification of stimulated emission will be very great and it most probably occurs close to the edge of photonic band gap with the fundamental reason and the group velocity close to the edge of band gap being very small or abnormal.

Considering a one-dimensional photonic crystal covering nonlinear medium layer, the transfer matrix algorithm for one-dimensional inhomogeneous medium was applied to found the theoretical analysis model for the electromagnetic wave propagations. The plane electromagnetic waves solutions were obtained. And numerical realization method was also given out.The investigations show that the method simulated exactly the behavior of electromagnetic wave propagating in 1-D nonlinear medium. And optical bistable switching of 1-D photonic crystal with nonlinear medium layer covering can be shown validly and concisely.

Study on optical gain of one-dimensional photonic crystals with active impurity

Localized fields in the defect mode of one-dimensional photonic crystals with active impurity are studied with the help of the theory of spontaneous emission from two-level atoms embedded in photonic crystals. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the enhancement of stimulated radiation, as well as the phenomena of transmissivity larger than unity and the abnormality of group velocity close to the edges of photonic band gap, are related to the negative imaginary part of the complex effective refractive index of doped layers. This means that the complex effective refractive index has a negative imaginary part, and that the impurity state with very high quality factor and great state density will occur in the photonic forbidden band if active impurity is introduced into the defect layer properly. Therefore, the spontaneous emission can be enhanced, the amplitude of stimulated emission will be very large and it occurs most probably close to the edges of photonic band gap with the fundamental reason, the group velocity close to the edges of band gap is very small or abnormal.
