Efficient In Situ Generation of Photon-Memory Entanglement in a Nonlinear Cavity

Hoi-Kwan Lau, Hong Wei Qiao, Aashish A. Clerk +1 more

Parametrically driving an optical cavity that simultaneously couples to an atomic ensemble quantum memory enables in situ generation of multimode photon-memory entanglement. A high-rate bipartite photon-memory entanglement can be generated even after discarding one entangled optical mode. This protocol can be realized with existing technologies based on photonic resonators integrated with a rare-earth-ion doped quantum memory. The proposed scheme shows significant advantages in entanglement generation rates compared with prevailing quantum memory protocols and experiments, with theoretical ebit rates of tens of MHz without fine-tuned operating conditions. Such a photon-memory entanglement source offers a versatile resource for quantum networking and interconnect applications.

We develop an integrated SiC/Rare-earth photonic platform enabling in-situ photon-memory entanglement within an absorptive rare-earth quantum memory. Entanglement generation rate up to 10 Mebits/s and heralding efficiency >70% are expected.

Proposal for a coherent quantum memory for propagating microwave photons

M Afzelius, Nicolas Sangouard, G Johansson +2 more

We describe a multi-mode quantum memory for propagating microwave photons that combines a solid-state spin ensemble resonantly coupled to a frequency tunable single-mode microwave cavity. We first show that high efficiency mapping of the quantum state transported by a free photon to the spin ensemble is possible both for strong and weak coupling between the cavity mode and the spin ensemble. We also show that even in the weak coupling limit unit efficiency and faithful retrieval can be obtained through time reversal inhomogeneous dephasing based on spin echo techniques. This is possible provided that the cavity containing the spin ensemble and the transmission line are impedance matched. We finally discuss the prospects for an experimental implementation using a rare-earth doped crystal coupled to a superconducting resonator.
