Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition from lattice sine-Gordon model

Abstract

\nWe obtain nonperturbative results on the sine-Gordon model using the lattice field technique. In particular, we employ the Fourier accelerated hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for our studies. We find the critical temperature of the theory based autocorrelation time, as well as the finite size scaling of the “thickness” observable used in an earlier lattice study by Hasenbusch et al.\n

Langevin simulation of the chirally decomposed sine-Gordon model

L. Moriconi, Marco Moriconi

A large class of quantum and statistical field theoretical models, encompassing relevant condensed matter and non-Abelian gauge systems, are defined in terms of complex actions. As the ordinary Monte Carlo methods are useless in dealing with these models, alternative computational strategies have been proposed along the years. The Langevin technique, in particular, is known to be frequently plagued with difficulties such as strong numerical instabilities or subtle ergodic behavior. Regarding the chirally decomposed version of the sine-Gordon model as a prototypical case for the failure of the Langevin approach, we devise a truncation prescription in the stochastic differential equations which yields numerical stability and is assumed not to spoil the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. This conjecture is supported by a finite size scaling analysis, whereby a massive phase ending at a line of critical points is clearly observed for the truncated stochastic model.

The Kosterlitz–Thouless transition in thin films: a Monte Carlo study of three-dimensional lattice models

Martin Hasenbusch

We study the phase transition of thin films in the three-dimensional XY universality class. To this end, we perform a Monte Carlo study of the improved two-component ϕ 4 model, the improved dynamically diluted XY model and the standard XY model on the simple cubic lattice. We study films of a thickness up to L 0 = 32 lattice spacings. In the short direction of the lattice, free boundary conditions are employed. Using a finite size scaling (FSS) method, proposed recently, we determine the transition temperature with high accuracy. The effectively two-dimensional finite size scaling behaviour of the Binder cumulant U 4 , the second-moment correlation length over the lattice size ξ 2nd / L , the ratio of the partition functions with anti-periodic and periodic boundary conditions Z a / Z p and the helicity modulus ϒ clearly confirm the Kosterlitz–Thouless nature of the transition. We analyse the scaling of the transition temperature with the thickness L 0 of the film. We compute the universal ratio of the thickness of the film L 0 and the transverse correlation length ξ T in the three-dimensional thermodynamic limit at the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition temperature of a film of thickness L 0 : [ L 0,KT /ξ T ] * = 1.595(7). This results can be compared with experimental results on thin films of 4 He near the λ-transition.

Critical behavior of the quantum double-sine-Gordon model

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Pasquale Sodano

We investigate the critical behavior of systems modeled by the quantum double-sine-Gordon theory. We find the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a region of the phase space. For different ranges of the physical parameters, the model is shown to be equivalent to a free massive Dirac field.

Comparison of renormalization group schemes for sine-Gordon-type models

I. Nándori, S. Nagy, Kornél Sailer +1 more

The scheme dependence of the renormalization group (RG) flow has been investigated in the local potential approximation for two-dimensional periodic, sine-Gordon type field-theoretic models discussing the applicability of various functional RG methods in detail. It was shown that scheme-independent determination of such physical parameters is possible as the critical frequency (temperature) at which Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii type phase transition takes place in the sine-Gordon and the layered sine-Gordon models, and the critical ratio characterizing the Ising-type phase transition of the massive sine-Gordon model. For the latter case, the Maxwell construction represents a strong constraint on the RG flow, which results in a scheme-independent infrared value for the critical ratio. For the massive sine-Gordon model also the shrinking of the domain of the phase with spontaneously broken periodicity is shown to take place due to the quantum fluctuations.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition close to zero temperature

Mikhail Gennag'evich Vasin

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition is considered in the condition of lowest temperatures, when thermal fluctuations give place to quantum ones. For this goal, the critical dynamic of the Sine-Gordon model near the quantum critical point is considered. The approach based on the Keldysh-Schwinger technique of non-equilibrium dynamics description is used, as well as the method of taking into account the crossover from the thermal fluctuation regime to the quantum one in the renormalization group technique. For the system with low vortex concentration, it is shown that the BKT transition unavoidably occurs at a temperature above the crossover temperature from the thermal fluctuation regime to quantum one. As a result at small temperatures the critical exponent of the BKT transition, $η=1/4$, remains unchanged, however, the universal relation of the superfluid density jump adjusts a little from the well-known relation by Nelson and Kosterlitz.

Correlation functions of the 2D sine-Gordon model

K. Nomura

A number of two-dimensional (2D) critical phenomena can be described in terms of the 2D sine-Gordon model. With bosonization, several 1D quantum systems can be transformed to the same model. However, the transition of the 2D sine-Gordon model, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, is essentially different from a second-order transition. The divergence of the correlation length is more rapid than any power law, and there are logarithmic corrections. These pathological features make it difficult to determine the BKT transition point and critical indices from finite-size calculations. In this paper we calculate correlation functions of this model using a real-space renormalization technique. It is found that several correlation functions, or eigenvalues of the corresponding transfer matrix for a finite system, become degenerate on the BKT line, including the logarithmic corrections. By the use of this degeneracy, which reflects the hidden SU(2) symmetry on the BKT line, it is possible to determine the BKT critical line with high precision from a small amount of data and to identify the universality class. In addition, new universal relations are found. These results shed light on the relation between Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization.
