Adiabatic tunneling of Bose—Einstein condensates with modulated atom interaction in a double-well potential

Xin Xiao-Tian, Fang Huang, Xu Zhi-Jun +1 more

We study the adiabatic tunneling of Bose—Einstein condensates in a symmetric double-well potential when the interaction strength between the atoms is modulated linearly or in a cosine periodic form. It is shown that the system evolves along a nonlinear eigenstate path. In the case of linear modulation under the adiabatic approximation conditions, the tunneling probability of the condensate atoms to the other potential well is half. However, when the system is periodically scanned in the adiabatic process, we find an interesting phenomenon. A small change in the cycle period can lead to the condensate atoms returning to the right well or tunneling to the left well. The system comes from a linear eigenstate back to a nonlinear one, which is completely different from the linear eigenstate evolution. We explain the results by using the energy level and the phase diagram.

Adiabatic tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensatein double-well potential

Huang Fang, Haibin Li

We studied the adiabatic tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in double-well potential with circle adiabatic variation of energy level spacing. We found that the adiabatic theorem is violated during the evolution of BEC, when the initial state is chosen such that all condensate atoms are in the shallow well and the interaction between atoms is strong enough. Furthermore, we found that the condensates can return to the initial state or not, depending on the evolution periods. In addition, we also found the evolution is dependent on the choice of initial state, which indicates an asymmetric character. With the help of the graph of energy levels and the phase diagram, we explained the results obtained.

Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensate in a spatially magnetic modulated trap

Liyun Yang, Libin Fu, Jie Liu

We study tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a effective double-well potential (a single well with a spatially magnetic modulated scattering length, actually), called pseudo double-well trap, in which the interaction of atoms characterized by the s-wave scattering length a s can be widely tuned with a magnetic-field Feshbach resonance. As a result, corresponding to different nonlinear parameters, the energy levels of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation can have complex structures in their dependence on the bias between the wells. We discuss the emergence of looped levels, which lead to a breakdown of adiabaticity that the Landau-Zener transition probability does not vanish even in the adiabatic limit. Moreover, we also find that the Landau-Zener tunneling in the pseudo trap show many striking properties distinguished from that of the real trap model (where the barrier is created by the external potential). Possible experimental observation in an opticallyinduced photonic lattices in a photorefractive material is suggested.
