Linear Invariants and the Solution of a Time-Dependent Coupled Quantal Oscillator.

Abstract

Summary. - We obtain here the solution of a system of two coupled oscillators under the influence of damping force and time-dependent external force. The solution is obtained by first constructing linear invariants for this system. The exact dynamics of time-dependent quantal harmonic oscillator with timedependent frequency has been extensively studied in recent years exploiting the explicitly time-dependent invariants (1-5). The fact that there exists a simple relationship between the eigenstates of the invariant and the solution of the corresponding SehrSclinger equation has prompted people to find general form of invariants for time-dependent oscillator-type Hamiltonian. In these approaches quadratic type of invariants have mostly been considered. Further, these invariants involve a simple function ~(t), related to the amplitude of the classical free oscillator, and satisfies a nonlinear equation which should be solved for practical application. However, there has been attempt so far to study the dynamics of a time-dependent coupled-oscillator system. We, therefore, consider in the present work a system of two coupled oscillators, both damped and under time-dependent external force. To get the solution of the SchrSdinger equation for this system, we first obtain explicitly timedependent invariants which are linear in position and momentum variables. The two advantages with the linear invariants is that the eigenvalues of the invariant can be made continuous with suitable initial condition on the motion of oscillators and, further, that it involves only the amplitude of the classical oscillator and thus can be easily diagonalized.

Linear invariants of a time-dependent quantal oscillator

Ramachandran Vaidyanathan

Explicitly time-dependent invariants, linear in x and p, are found to simplify the solution of the Schrödinger equation with oscillator-type Hamiltonian. As an example, exact dynamics is obtained of the time-dependent quantal oscillator, with damping and subject to external force. The invariant and hence the solution of the Schrödinger equation involve only the amplitude of the classical damped oscillator. The identity of our solution with a recently obtained result is illustrated. A digressive remark on quadratic invariants and the Dirac operator formalism is added.

Exact solution of a time-dependent quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a perturbative force

Dinkar C. Khandekar, S. V. Lawande

The problem of a quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a time-dependent frequency acted on by a time-dependent perturbative force is exactly solved. The wavefunctions are found in Schrödinger representation using the theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants and also by an expansion of the Feynman propagator. The propagator is obtained in exactly closed form by an explicit path integration of the classical Lagrangian. It is found that the wavefunctions and the propagator depend only on the solution of classical damped oscillator through a single function ρ (t). The function ρ (t) itself may be obtained as a solution of a second order nonlinear differential equation under the appropriate set of initial conditions.

Quantum Dynamics of a Particle in a Linear Potential: Invariant Operator Approach and Discrete Spectrum Solutions

Mustapha Maamache, Aymen Bendjoudl

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a particle subjected to a linear potential using the Lewis--Riesenfeld invariant operator method. Starting from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation associated with a constant external force, we construct the most general Hermitian quadratic invariant and derive the corresponding coupled differential equations for its time-dependent coefficients. By means of an appropriate sequence of unitary transformations, the invariant operator is reduced to the form of a harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. This reduction enables a clear classification of the system according to the sign of the conserved quantity ω2. Particular attention is devoted to the physically relevant case ω2 >0, which yields a discrete eigenspectrum. Explicit analytical expressions for the invariant coefficients, the displacement parameters, and the transformed wave functions are obtained. The resulting formalism provides an exact quantum description of a particle under a constant force and establishes a direct connection between invariant theory and harmonic oscillator quantization.

On the quantum dynamics of a general time-dependent coupled oscillator

Rahma Zerimeche, Naima Mana, Maroua Sekhri +2 more

By using the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariants theory, we investigate the quantum dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) time-dependent coupled oscillator. We introduce a unitary transformation and show the conditions under which the invariant operator is uncoupled to describe two simple harmonic oscillators with time-independent frequencies and unit masses. The decouplement allows us to easily obtain the corresponding eigenstates. The generalization to three-dimensional (3D) time-dependent coupled oscillator is briefly discussed where a diagonalized invariant, which is exactly the sum of three simple harmonic oscillators, is obtained under specific conditions on the parameters.

Some remarks on analytical solutions for a damped quantum parametric oscillator

Dieter Schuch

Abstract The time-dependent Schrödinger equation for quadratic Hamiltonians has Gaussian wave packets as exact solutions. For the parametric oscillator with frequency ω(t), the width of these wave packets must be time-dependent. This time-dependence can be determined by solving a complex nonlinear Riccati equation or an equivalent real nonlinear Ermakov equation. All quantum dynamical properties of the system can easily be constructed from these solutions, e.g., uncertainties of position and momentum, their correlations, ground state energies, etc. In addition, the link to the corresponding classical dynamics is supplied by linearizing the Riccati equation to a complex Newtonian equation, actually representing two equations of the same kind: one for the real and one for the imaginary part. If the solution of one part is known, the missing (linear independent) solution of the other can be obtained via a conservation law for the motion in the complex plane. Knowing these two solutions, the solution of the Ermakov equation can be determined immediately plus the explicit expressions for all the quantum dynamical properties mentioned above. The effect of a dissipative, linear velocity dependent friction force on these systems is discussed.

Formulation of general dynamical invariants and their unitary relations for time-dependent coupled quantum oscillators

Jeong Ryeol Choi

An exact invariant operator of time-dependent coupled oscillators is derived using the Liouville-von Neumann equation. The unitary relation between this invariant and the invariant of two uncoupled simple harmonic oscillators is represented. If we consider the fact that quantum solutions of the simple harmonic oscillator is well-known, this unitary relation is very useful in clarifying quantum characteristics of the original systems, such as entanglement, probability densities, fluctuations of the canonical variables, and decoherence. We can identify such quantum characteristics by inversely transforming the mathematical representations of quantum quantities belonging to the simple harmonic oscillators. As a case in point, the eigenfunctions of the invariant operator in the original systems are found through inverse transformation of the well-known eigenfunctions associated with the simple harmonic oscillators.
