Coherent Emission from the Nonpolar Optical Phonon of Diamond

Abstract

Emission of a coherent field transient from optical phonons in monocrystalline diamond is observed after impulsive femtosecond excitation. Measurements on an extremely pure sample suggest a monoatomic layer of surface dipoles as a leading source for this subtle effect.

Measurement of the Phonon Decoherence in Diamond Using Spectral Interference of Stokes Emission

FC. Waldermann, Joshua Nunn, Karl Surmacz +5 more

In this paper, we measure the decoherence time of phonons using spectral interference of the Stokes emission of diamond. Two 100 femtosecond laser pulses, separated by a delay tau, are sent through a polished diamond sample of 1.2 mm thickness. Optical phonons in the Brillouin zone centre are created by Raman scattering from the ultrafast laser pulses and can be heralded by the Stokes photons emitted, whose superposed spectrum is recorded by a spectrometer.

Coherent control of 40-THz optical phonons in diamond using femtosecond optical pulses

Tetsuya Kimata, Kazuma Yoda, Hana Matsumoto +4 more

A theory of the coherent control of optical phonons by double-pulse excitation was modified for the calculation of a large detuning case such as diamond; we calculated the amplitude of the optical phonons without using a rotating-wave approximation. Additionally, we took the frequency chirping and non-Gaussian pulse shape into consideration. The coherent control of the amplitude of 40 THz optical phonons in diamond was demonstrated by using a pair of infrared pulses at a pump-pump delay between $\ensuremath{-}10$ and 120 fs, and analyzed by using the modified theory.

Coherent, nonlinear two-phonon Raman spectra of diamond

G. L. Eesley, M. D. Levenson

This is the first reported observation of a second-order Raman spectrum by means of coherent Raman spectroscopy. Optically heterodyned Raman-induced Kerr-effect spectroscopy was used to study the two-phonon Raman peaks of a highly fluorescent sample of diamond with sensitivity exceeding that obtained in spontaneous scattering or other forms of coherent Raman techniques. The frequency of the one-phonon peak was measured to be 1333.1 +/- 0.5 cm(-1). The frequency of the sharp two-phonon peak was measured to be 2668.6 +/- 0.5 cm(-1), in agreement with lower-resolution spontaneous-scattering measurements.

Coherent control theory and experiment of optical phonons in diamond

The coherent control of optical phonons has been experimentally demonstrated in various physical systems. While the transient dynamics for optical phonons can be explained by phenomenological models, the coherent control experiment cannot be explained due to the quantum interference. Here, we theoretically propose the generation and detection processes of the optical phonons and experimentally confirm our theoretical model using the diamond optical phonon by the doublepump-probe type experiment.
