Laser cooling of Rydberg atoms in bichromatic standing waves

Jingzhong Guo, E. Arimondo

We present a calculation of cooling of Rydberg atoms in bichromatic standing light waves. The atoms in our model are assumed to have a cascade three-level transition scheme, with the second excited level being the Rydberg state. The cooling fields, which also excite the atoms to the Rydberg state, consist of two standing waves whose frequencies are tuned near the two transition frequencies of the cascade atomic system. It is shown that the mechanisms of Sisyphus cooling and velocity-selective coherent population trapping can co-exist in such a configuration, and under certain conditions the majority of the laser-cooled atoms are in the Rydberg state.

Laser Cooling, Friction and Diffusion in Three-Level Cascade System in Squeezed Vacuum

Lei Tan, Cuiling Zhang, Jinfang Zhang +2 more

A theoretical study is carried out for the laser cooling of a moving three-level atom in a ladder configuration, driven by a bichromatic laser fields with a broad-band squeezed vacuum. The friction, diffusion coefficients and the equilibrium temperature are calculated numerically and shown graphically as a function of two-photon detunings for various cases of the squeezed vacuum. It is shown that the relative phases between the two coherent fields and the squeezed vacuum field play an important role in the cooling process. For a suitable choice of parameters, the atomic cooling temperature may be reduced to below that in the case of a vacuum, even down to two orders below the Doppler temperature limit. The efficiency of this cooling scheme is also analyzed.

Laser cooling of a moving atom in a bichromatical travelling field

Lei Tan, Zhang Rui Qin

A theoretical study is made of the Doppler cooling of a moving three-level atom coupled to bichromatical traveling fields. The dependences of the equilibrium temperature of the atom on two-photon detunings are calculated numerically under conditions of different laser intensity, frequencies and propaga- tional direction. It is shown that temperatures lower than the one in the one-photon processes can be achieved in the enhancement of the two-photon processes.
