Abstract

Abstract We investigate kink-dark complex solitons (KDCSs) in a three-component Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with repulsive interactions and pair-transition (PT) effects. Soliton profiles critically depend on the phase differences between dark solitons excitation elements. We report a type of kink-dark soliton profile which shows a droplet-bubble-droplet with a density dip, in sharp contrast to previously studied bubble-droplets. The interaction between two KDCSs is further investigated. It demonstrates some striking particle transition behaviours during their collision processes, while soliton profiles survive after the collision. Additionally, we exhibit the state transition dynamics between a kink soliton and a dark soliton. These results suggest that PT effects can induce more abundant complex solitons dynamics in multi-component BEC.

Stability analysis on dark solitons in quasi-1D Bose–Einstein condensate with three-body interactions

Yushan Zhou, Hongjuan Meng, Juan Zhang +7 more

The stability properties of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a Jacobian elliptic sine potential with three-body interactions are investigated theoretically. The solitons are obtained by the Newton-Conjugate Gradient method. A stationary cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived to describe the profiles of solitons via the multi-scale technique. It is found that the three-body interaction has distinct effect on the stability properties of solitons. Especially, such a nonlinear system supports the so-called dark solitons (kink or bubble), which can be excited not only in the gap, but also in the band. The bubbles are always linearly and dynamically unstable, and they cannot be excited if the three-body interaction is absent. Both stable and unstable kinks, depending on the physical parameters, can be excited in the BEC system.

Domain walls and their interactions in a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate*

Ling-Zheng Meng, Yan-Hong Qin, Li-Chen Zhao +1 more

We investigate domain wall excitations in a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate with two-body interactions and pair-transition effects. It is shown that domain wall excitations can be described exactly by kink and anti-kink excitations in each component. The domain wall solutions are given analytically, which exist with different conditions compared with the domain wall reported before. Bubble-droplet structure can be also obtained from the fundamental domain wall, and their interactions are investigated analytically. Especially, domain wall interactions demonstrate some striking particle transition dynamics. These striking transition effects make the domain wall admit quite different collision behavior, in contrast to the collision between solitons or other nonlinear waves. The collisions between kinks induce some phase shift, which makes the domain wall change greatly. Their collisions can be elastic or inelastic with proper combination of fundamental domain walls. These characters can be used to manipulate one domain wall by interacting with other ones.

Multivalley dark solitons in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions

Yan-Hong Qin, Li-Chen Zhao, Zeng-Qiang Yang +1 more

We obtain multivalley dark soliton solutions with asymmetric or symmetric profiles in multicomponent repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates by developing the Darboux transformation method. We demonstrate that the width-dependent parameters of solitons significantly affect the velocity ranges and phase jump regions of multivalley dark solitons, in sharp contrast to scalar dark solitons. For double-valley dark solitons, we find that the phase jump is in the range [0,2π], which is quite different from that of the usual single-valley dark soliton. Based on our results, we argue that the phase jump of an n-valley dark soliton could be in the range [0,nπ], supported by our analysis extending up to five-component condensates. The interaction between a double-valley dark soliton and a single-valley dark soliton is further investigated, and we reveal a striking collision process in which the double-valley dark soliton is transformed into a breather after colliding with the single-valley dark soliton. Our analyses suggest that this breather transition exists widely in the collision processes involving multivalley dark solitons. The possibilities for observing these multivalley dark solitons in related Bose-Einstein condensates experiments are discussed.

Spin mixing induced dynamics of spinor solitons in $F=1$ Bose Einstein condensates

T. Panagos, A. Romero-Ros, G. C. Katsimiga +2 more

We explore soliton interactions in a homogeneous spinor $F=1$ Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) in the presence of a magnetic field, focusing on dark bright dark and bright dark bright configurations. We investigate how these interactions depend on the phase differences among bright solitons and their influence during the dynamics. Our findings align with prior non spinor results, i.e., repulsion among in phase bright solitons and attraction among out of phase pairs in self repulsive atomic BECs. The potential bright soliton attraction, added to the short range repulsion of dark dark soliton interactions, can lead to bound states. However, we find that these bound states break in the presence of spinor interactions due to the particle exchange dynamics between the hyperfine states of the components. Additonally, we develop an effective classical model to describe the soliton dynamics, using a Lagrangian approach. The accuracy of the model is tested by comparing it against numerical simulations. Our results suggest that the proposed model captures the essential features of soliton behavior in the presence of spin interactions, and provides congruent soliton trajectories and interspecies particle exchange dynamics in most of the cases.

Dark quantum droplets and solitary waves in beyond-mean-field Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures

Matthew Edmonds

Quantum liquidlike states of matter have been realized in an ongoing series of experiments with ultracold Bose gases. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods we identify the specific criteria for the existence of dark solitons in beyond-mean-field binary condensates, revealing how these excitations exist for both repulsive and attractive interactions, the latter leading to dark quantum droplets with properties intermediate between a dark soliton and a quantum droplet. The phenomenology of these excitations is explored within the full parameter space of the model, revealing a spatial profile of the excitation that differs significantly from the Zakharov-Shabat soliton, leading to a negative effective mass that is enhanced in the presence of the quantum fluctuations. Finally the dynamics of pairs of the excitations are explored, showing nonintegrable dynamics and dark soliton bound states in the attractive regime.

Non-autonomous bright–dark solitons and Rabi oscillations in multi-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Thambithurai Kanna, R Babu Mareeswaran, F Tsitoura +2 more

We study the dynamics of non-autonomous bright-dark matter-wave solitons in two- and three- component Bose-Einstein condensates. Our setting includes a time-dependent parabolic potential and scattering length, as well as Rabi coupling of the separate hyperfine states. By means of a similarity transformation, we transform the non-autonomous coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into the completely integrable Manakov model with defocusing nonlinearity, and construct the explicit form of the non-autonomous soliton solutions. The propagation characteristics for the one-soliton state, and collision scenarios for multiple soliton states are discussed in detail for two types of time-dependent nonlinearities: a kink-like one and a periodically modulated one, with appropriate time-dependence of the trapping potential. We find that in the two-component condensates the nature of soliton propagation is determined predominantly by the nature of the nonlinearity, as well as the temporal modulation of the harmonic potential; switching in this setting is essentially due to Rabi coupling. We also perform direct numerical simulation of the non-autonomous two-component coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations to corroborate our analytical predictions. More interestingly, in the case of the three-component condensates, we find that the solitons can lead to collision-induced energy switching (energy-sharing collision), that can be profitably used to control Rabi switching or vice-versa. An interesting possibility of reversal of the nature of the constituent soliton, i.e., bright (dark) into dark (bright) due to Rabi coupling is demonstrated in the three-component setting.
