Coherent Emission from Rare Earth Ions in Electro-optic Crystals

L. F. Johnson, A. A. Ballman

We report the observation of coherent emission from three rare-earth ions in electro-optic crystals. Oscillation is observed from Nd3+ ions in Bi4Ge3O12, LiNbO3, and Ba0.75Ca0.25Nb26O at room temperature, and from Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions in LiNbO3 at 77°K. Second-harmonic radiation is obtained from LiNbO3:Tm3+ and electric-field modulation of threshold is observed for certain crystals of LiNbO3:Nd3+. The latter effect is believed to arise from crystal strain. The propagation angle for phase-matched second-harmonic generation is calculated to lie at 43° to the c axis for both LiNbO3:Tm3+ and LiNbO3:Ho3+ at 77°K. Phasematched second-harmonic generation from LiNbO3:Nd3+ is not possible, since the maser line is an extraordinary wave. However, the polarization of the maser line in LiNbO3:Nd3+ is appropriate for phasematched parametric frequency conversion in the near infrared. Attempts to observe such radiation were not successful due to the limited power available in the fundamental.

[Infrared multiphoton quantum cutting phenomena of rare earth materials].

Xiaobo Chen, Guojian Yang, Yun-Zhi Zhang +9 more

Infrared quantum cutting of rare earth ion is an international hot research field. It is significant for the enhancement of solar cell efficiency and for the reduction of solar cell price. The present paper summarizes the research significance of infrared quantum cutting of rare earth ion. Based on the summarization of general principle and loss mechanism of solar cell, the possible method to enhance the solar cell efficiency by infrared quantum cutting is analyzed. Meanwhile, the present paper summarizes the infrared quantum cutting phenomena of Er3+ ion single-doped material. There is intense 4I13/2 --> 4I15/2 infrared quantum cutting luminescence of Er3+ ion when the 2H11/2 energy level is excited. The intense {2H11/2 --> 4I9/2, 4I15/2 --> 4I13/2} cross energy transfer is the main reason for the result in the high quantum cutting efficiency when the 2H11/2 energy level is excited.

External Electromagnetic Field Induced Electronic Structures and Novel Optical Functions of Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Glasses.

Jianrong Qiu

We researched the realization of novel optical functions of glass by combining an external electromagnetic field induced electronic structure and rare-earth-ions. We reviewed the phenomena, mechanisms, and the applications of photostimulated luminescence induced by X-ray, long-lasting phosphorescence by ultra-violet light, space-selective manipulation of the valence state of rare-earth-ion, and the formation of rare-earth-ion-doped optical waveguide for light amplification by a focused infrared femtosecond laser. The proposed concept will lead to a new possibility in the realization of novel optical functions for rare-earth-ion-doped glasses.
