Experimental generation and characterization of partially spatially coherent qubits

Preeti Sharma, Sakshi Rao, Bhaskar Kanseri

Abstract Partially spatially coherent qubits are more immune to turbulent atmospheric conditions than coherent qubits, which makes them excellent candidates for free-space quantum communication. In this article, we report the generation of partially spatially coherent qubits in a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process using a Gaussian Schell model (GSM) pump beam. For this non-linear process, we demonstrate experimentally for the first time, the transfer of spatial coherence features of the pump (classical) to the biphotons (quantum) field. Also, the spatial profiles of partially coherent qubits generated in type-I and type-II non-collinear SPDC process are experimentally observed and multi-mode nature of partially coherent photons (qubit) is ascertained. These investigations pave the way toward the efficient generation of partially spatially coherent qubits with a tunable degree of spatial coherence, which lead to wide range of applications in frontier areas such as quantum cryptography, teleportation, imaging, and lithography.

Partial Coherence and Coherence Length in Stimulated Parametric Down-Conversion

Gustavo Henrique dos Santos, Raphael César de Souza Pimenta, Rafael M. Gomes +2 more

In parametric down-conversion, a nonlinear crystal is pumped by a laser and spontaneous emission takes place in signal and idler modes according to the phase-matching conditions. A seed laser can stimulate the emission in the signal beam if there is mode overlap between them. This also enhances the emission in the idler beam, affecting its coherence properties. While the degree of coherence of the idler field as a function of the seed power has already been studied, the transverse coherence length has not yet been properly investigated. The transverse coherence length is a key parameter of optical beams that determines the beam divergence, for example. Here, we present a theoretical and experimental investigation of the transverse coherence length in stimulated down-conversion. In addition, we make a connection between stimulated down-conversion and partially coherent sources like the Gaussian-Schell model beams, and show that in general the idler field cannot be described with this model.

Simultaneous parametric generation and up-conversion of entangled optical images

M. Yu. Saygin, A. S. Chirkin

A quantum theory of parametric amplification and frequency conversion of an optical image in coupled nonlinear optical processes that include one parametric amplification process at high-frequency pumping and two up-conversion processes in the same pump field is developed. The field momentum operator that takes into account the diffraction and group velocities of the waves is used to derive the quantum equations related to the spatial dynamics of the images during the interaction. An optical scheme for the amplification and conversion of a close image is considered. The mean photon number density and signal-to-noise ratio are calculated in the fixed-pump-field approximation for images at various frequencies. It has been established that the signal-to-noise ratio decreases with increasing interaction length in the amplified image and increases in the images at the generated frequencies, tending to asymptotic values for all interacting waves. The variance of the difference of the numbers of photons is calculated for various pairs of frequencies. The quantum entanglement of the optical images formed in a high-frequency pump field is shown to be converted to higher frequencies during the generation of sum frequencies. Thus, two pairs of entangled optical images are produced in the process considered.
