Abstract

In this paper, we propose a multi-domain quantum key pool (QKP) capacity adaptive supplement scheme based on balance between key resource and routing hop in multi-domain QKD-ON, and we conduct the simulation and evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of service blocking probability and utilization of key resource. Results show that the algorithm can reduce service blocking probability.

Protection Schemes for Key Service in Optical Networks Secured by Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)

Hua Wang, Yongli Zhao, Xiaosong Yu +5 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is considered a secure solution for key distribution and applied in optical networks to overcome security issues by providing key services in different lightpaths. In optical networks, lightpaths in fibers can be used for the delivery of QKD due to their good transmission performance. Accordingly, optical networks secured by QKD have been regarded as an important paradigm, and survivability in this paradigm is an issue worthy of study. In this paper, we focus on the protection schemes for key services in optical networks secured by QKD. Specifically, in consistency with two characteristics of key services (i.e., the key-updating process and key-volume adaptive routing), two key-volume adaptive protection schemes (i.e., dedicated protection and shared protection) are proposed for the networks against link failures. In such scenarios, the designed key-protection threshold can alleviate the tight network resources caused by the key-updating process. Simulation work has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of blocking probability, resource utilization, and proportion of secret-key consumption with different key-protection thresholds and update periods. Numerical results show that the two proposed schemes are effective in providing protection. Furthermore, evaluating the impact of protection on network security verifies a trade-off that exists between how much protection can be provided for key services versus the overall security of the network, given a certain resource budget.

QKD Key Provisioning With Multi-Level Pool Slicing for End-to-End Security Services in Optical Networks

Qingcheng Zhu, Xiaosong Yu, Yongli Zhao +2 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides future-proofed security based on the quantum physics. The end-to-end security services in the fields such as finance, government, and military are mainly carried by optical networks. Limited by technical and economical obstacles of QKD deployment, partially-QKD-deployed optical networks (pQKD-ONs) are much more practical. Key pooling is a technique to decouple keys from the underlying infrastructure for timely key provisioning. However, traditional QKD key provisioning (QKPR) methods are specific to QKD-deployed nodes. In this paper, we propose the pQKD-ON architecture and design the multi-level key pool slicing scheme for key management in pQKD-ONs. Then, we propose a general auxiliary-graph-based QKPR algorithm for key supply in pQKD-ONs. Based on the algorithm, we design four dynamic QKPR policies by adjusting edge weights of the auxiliary graphs including Quantum-Key-Pool-First (QKP-First), Key-Pool-Slice-First (KPS-First), Key-Availability-First (KA-First), and Quantum-Key-Pool-All (QKP-All) policies. We evaluate the performances of the QKPR policies in terms of key consumption, security level, and QKPR latency under two network topologies. Simulation results show that the KA-First policy can achieve 9.9% lower key consumption ratio than the KPS-First policy; the KPS-First policy sacrifices the security level but can achieve lower QKPR latency than the QKP-First and QKP-All policies.

Multi-path-based quasi-real-time key provisioning in quantum-key-distribution enabled optical networks (QKD-ON)

Xiaosong Yu, Xiang Liu, Yuhang Liu +4 more

With its information-theoretic security, quantum-key-distribution-enabled optical networks (QKD-ON) have become a promising candidate for future optical networks. The concept of quantum key pool (QKP) was introduced to offer an effective strategy for storing quantum keys. However, with the loss on its theoretical security due to storing these keys, balancing the storage of quantum keys and the security requirements of QKD-ONs poses a major challenge in their practical deployments. Hence, in this paper a concept of quasi-real-time key provisioning (QRT-KP) is introduced to address the tradeoff between quantum key storage and the degree of security. To satisfy the practical deployment of QRT-KP and the requirement of high-traffic flow, we propose a multi-path based QRT-KP (MP-QRT-KP) algorithm. Simulation results show that the MP-QRT-KP effectively enhances the performance of QKD-ONs in different scenarios, and it turns out that the algorithm performs better than single-path based QRT-KP (SP-QRT-KP) in terms of the success probability of key-allocation requests and key-resources utilization.

A Dynamic-Routing Algorithm Based on a Virtual Quantum Key Distribution Network

Lin Bi, Minghui Miao, Xiaoqiang Di

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is an encrypted communication technique based on the principles of quantum mechanics that ensures communication security by exploiting the properties of quantum states. Currently, the transmission efficiency of the QKD system is low. Trusted relay technology is used to solve this problem and achieve long-distance transmission. However, trusted relaying alone cannot decrypt the issues of poor link stability and the low utilization of key resources. To further optimize the system performance, we propose a dynamic routing algorithm. One of the improvement schemes includes the following: firstly, an adjustable-size quantum key pool (QKP) is designed, which can dynamically adjust the size of the refreshing pool according to the actual demand. Secondly, the utilization of key resources is improved by using the residual quantum key model to dynamically obtain the remaining key amount in the QKP and set the key amount threshold. We calculate the link-blocking probability and track the blocking intensity and blocking entry by combining the Poisson process, thus realizing the evaluation of the link stability. Finally, the number of remaining keys in the QKP and the link-blocking probability combine with the random wandering model as the basis of the route selection for the QKD dynamic routing algorithm to achieve efficient key path selection. We validated the algorithm by comparing it with other algorithms on the Mininet simulation platform, and the algorithm proved to have a better performance in terms of congestion avoidance, delay reduction, and improved QKD efficiency. This scheme provides a novel and efficient way to solve the problems in existing QKD systems. It effectively improves the transmission efficiency and strengthens the system’s security by dynamically obtaining the critical volume, accurately evaluating the link state, and selecting the optimal critical path.
