Noise-Robust Distributed Quantum Sensing: A Variational Quantum Approach

Uman Khalid, Muhammad Shohibul Ulum, Trung Q. Duong +2 more

Quantum sensing networks (QSNs) are expected to play a critical role in quantum networks by achieving measurement precision unattainable with classical methods, leveraging quantum properties such as superposition and entanglement. Distributed quantum sensing, a key application of QSNs, can reach Heisenberg-limited precision scaling with the number of sensors involved. However, practical implementation faces significant challenges due to noise effects, complicating the optimal selection of sensor configurations. In this paper, we propose applying a variational quantum algorithm (VQA) combined with a genetic algorithm to efficiently mitigate noise in quantum sensing protocols and to identify high-quality sensor configurations. Performance analysis demonstrates that our approach outperforms traditional sensor configuration methods in single- and multi-parameter sensing scenarios under dephasing and amplitude damping noises, significantly improving quantum sensing accuracy and scalability.

Variational quantum algorithm for estimating the quantum Fisher information

Jacob L. Beckey, Marco Cerezo, Akira Sone +1 more

The quantum Fisher information (QFI) quantifies the ultimate precision of estimating a parameter from a quantum state and can be regarded as a reliability measure of a quantum system as a quantum sensor. However, estimation of the QFI for a mixed state is in general a computationally demanding task. In this paper we present a variational quantum algorithm called variational quantum Fisher information estimation (VQFIE) to address this task. By estimating lower and upper bounds on the QFI, based on bounding the fidelity, VQFIE outputs a range in which the actual QFI lies. This result can then be used to variationally prepare the state that maximizes the QFI, for the application of quantum sensing. In contrast to previous approaches, VQFIE does not require knowledge of the explicit form of the sensor dynamics. We simulate the algorithm for a magnetometry setup and demonstrate the tightening of our bounds as the state purity increases. For this example, we compare our bounds with literature bounds and show that our bounds are tighter.

Variational Spin-Squeezing Algorithms on Programmable Quantum Sensors

Raphael Kaubruegger, Pietro Silvi, Christian Kokail +5 more

Arrays of atoms trapped in optical tweezers combine features of programmable analog quantum simulators with atomic quantum sensors. Here we propose variational quantum algorithms, tailored for tweezer arrays as programmable quantum sensors, capable of generating entangled states on demand for precision metrology. The scheme is designed to generate metrological enhancement by optimizing it in a feedback loop on the quantum device itself, thus preparing the best entangled states given the available quantum resources. We apply our ideas to the generation of spin-squeezed states on Sr atom tweezer arrays, where finite-range interactions are generated through Rydberg dressing. The complexity of experimental variational optimization of our quantum circuits is expected to scale favorably with system size. We numerically show our approach to be robust to noise, and surpassing known protocols.
