The Quantum Internet represents a paradigm shift in communication technology, leveraging quantum mechanical principles such as superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem to enable ultra-secure, high-fidelity, and potentially revolutionary global connectivity. Unlike the classical internet, which transmits bits through electromagnetic signals, the Quantum Internet transmits qubits, allowing the creation of unbreakable cryptographic channels, distributed quantum computation, and quantum-enhanced sensing networks. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the Quantum Internet, covering its underlying principles, layered architecture, enabling hardware technologies, and core communication protocols. We analyze current and emerging applications, from secure government and financial communications to healthcare and fundamental physics experiments. The study highlights the unique advantages of quantum networking, such as intrinsic security against eavesdropping, global-scale entanglement distribution, and integration with distributed computing infrastructures. At the same time, it addresses practical limitations, including distance constraints, quantum memory coherence times, infrastructure costs, and security risks associated with hardware vulnerabilities. Special attention is given to the feasibility of large-scale deployment in India, leveraging national programs such as NM-QTA and QuEST, as well as satellite-based quantum communication initiatives by ISRO. The paper concludes with a roadmap for the realization of a global quantum network, identifying technical, infrastructural, and policy challenges that must be addressed in the coming decades.
Quantum communication and information networks offer unprecedented processing efficiency and security for data transfers. Technologies like quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum repeaters, quantum memory, and quantum entanglement sources are enabling technologies that ensure secure communication. QKD methods use quantum physics concepts to establish cryptographic keys, while quantum repeaters compensate for signal loss in fiber optic cables. Quantum memory enables storage and retrieval of quantum information, while quantum entanglement generators generate entangled photon pairs. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have significantly improved the efficacy and security of quantum communication. These methods can facilitate ultra-secure, reliable, large-scale communication and even a future quantum internet by analyzing quantum protocols and mitigating noise-induced errors. QKD protocols ensure secure communication channels, while quantum repeaters establish secure long-distance communication lines by mitigating signal loss. Traditional Internet technology is susceptible to surveillance due to Shannon's information theory and mathematics. The quantum internet (QI) uses satellite-based quantum communication and quantum cryptographic protocols for physical QI. Quantum entanglement sources fortify secure communication protocols, improving resistance to attacks. Quantum information networks (QINs) enhance computing, sensing, and security capabilities over extended distances. The development of reliable, robust communication systems depends on these technologies. Quantum-secured networks enhance urban security, smart management, and infrastructure protection by providing data privacy and facilitating secure data transmission, thereby facilitating robust infrastructure and technological development.
The advanced notebooks, mobile phones, and internet applications in today’s world that we use are all entrenched in classical communication bits of zeros and ones. Classical internet has laid its foundation originating from the amalgamation of mathematics and Claude Shannon’s theory of information. However, today’s internet technology is a playground for eavesdroppers. This poses a serious challenge to various applications that rely on classical internet technology, and it has motivated the researchers to switch to new technologies that are fundamentally more secure. By exploring the quantum effects, researchers paved the way into quantum networks that provide security, privacy, and range of capabilities such as quantum computation, communication, and metrology. The realization of Quantum Internet (QI) requires quantum communication between various remote nodes through quantum channels guarded by quantum cryptographic protocols. Such networks rely upon quantum bits (qubits) that can simultaneously take the value of zeros and ones. Due to the extraordinary properties of qubits such as superposition, entanglement, and teleportation, it gives an edge to quantum networks over traditional networks in many ways. At the same time, transmitting qubits over long distances is a formidable task and extensive research is going on satellite-based quantum communication, which will deliver breakthroughs for physically realizing QI in near future. In this paper, QI functionalities, technologies, applications and open challenges have been extensively surveyed to help readers gain a basic understanding of the infrastructure required for the development of the global QI.

This research addresses the critical challenge of maintaining network security and privacy in the face of emerging quantum computing technologies. While classical cryptographic methods have long been the cornerstone of network security, the advent of quantum computing threatens to render many of these techniques obsolete. While previously proposed solutions, such as post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution, are useful in some aspects of maintaining the security of communications between individuals or organizations, they are often insufficient to protect against the full range of security implications that arise from quantum computing, especially in open shared quantum computing environments. Research in this area is largely challenged by the immaturity of the quantum hardware, quantum error correction, and how to best design secure quantum-safe network architectures in the long term, lack of frameworks for cryptography, and we have very little idea about the best way to use quantum computers to perform certain types of cryptographic attacks for periods well into the future, known as ‘collect now, break later’ attacks. This paper uses qualitative methodology which is based on systematic literature reviews, using case studies and a document analysis, with the purpose of providing an unabridged and precise assessment on the impact of quantum computing on network security. The study synthesizes the findings from several academic databases regarding the use of quantum technologies in real-world security applications. The findings highlight that quantum computing brings about breakthrough levels of computational power, as well as allowing for super-secure data transmission with quantum key distribution. But there are also new risks, such as crosstalk attacks, qubit sensing attacks and challenges from quantum decoherence and scalability. The paper identifies possible mitigation measures, including new techniques for quantum error correction, quantum-safe cryptography and novel approaches for quantum resources sharing. The findings are of significance for the economy and society as a whole, as they outline the urgency to shift security approaches for networks by developing quantum-safe algorithms and protocols, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to this end, and the need to develop policies to prepare for a post-quantum cryptographic era. This range of analysis offers to the researchers, policy-makers and industry professionals a roadmap and concrete guiding principles for future innovation and development of quantum-enhanced network security, concluding that although quantum computing poses as a profound security threat, it could, at the same time, offer revolutionary pathways for secure communications and data-protection when used properly.
