Abstract

The quantum search algorithm (QSA) is one of the most recent developments in the era of quantum signal processing (QSP) and quantum information theory (QIT). It shows a faster performance in finding the solutions of system such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, quantum error correction and others with a polynomial order over the classical one. Grover's algorithm is one of the first proposed QSA in identifying the index number of the solution of a system, whose solutions are known to the oracle. A further improved QSA called Boyer-Brassard-Høyer-Tapp (BBHT) is followed by the Durr-Hoyer algorithm (DHA), which proposes to find the solutions, while the exact number of the solutions is not known. In this treatise, we propose two modifications to the existing DHA and BBHT algorithms. In DHA, we propose a semi-quantum framework, where after each iteration in DHA, the non-solution points are removed in classical framework. This makes the data set iteratively shorter. In the case of BBHT algorithm, we propose to choose the Grover search number based on the Gamma distribution instead of the uniform one, which gives more chances to the new larger values to improve probability of success. The performance of the proposed QSAs demonstrates plausible improvement in search success performance as compared to their existing BBHT and DHA counterparts. Numerical simulations are conducted with the proposed QSA algorithms on a MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system to demonstrate the performance improvement.

A quantum search based signal detection for MIMO-OFDM systems

Fei Li, Lizhi Zhou, Li Liu +1 more

Multiple input multiple output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is considered as candidates for future broadband wireless services. In this paper a novel signal detection scheme based on Grover's quantum search algorithm is proposed for MIMO-OFDM systems. Grover's quantum search algorithm is based on the concept and principles of quantum computing, such as quantum bit, quantum register and quantum parallelism. An analysis is given to the theoretical basis of Grover's algorithm and the performance of Grover's algorithm is evaluated. A novel signal detector based on Grover's algorithm (GD) for MIMO-OFDM system is proposed. The simulation results show that the proposed detector has more powerful properties in bit error rate than MMSE detector and VBLAST-MMSE detector. The performance of the proposed GD detector is close to optimal when the failure probability is 0.001. When the failure probability is 0.00001, the performance of GD detector declines. In this case, our proposed improved Grover's algorithm based detector is still close to the optimal ML detector. The complexity of GD and IGD is O(√N). It's much better than classical ML detector which complexity is O(N).

Quantum-assisted multi-user wireless systems

Panagiotis Botsinis

The high complexity of numerous optimal classical communication schemes, such as the Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Maximum A posteriori Probability (MAP) Multi-User Detector (MUD) designed for coherent detection or the ML and MAP Multiple-Symbol Differential Detectors (MSDD) conceived for non-coherent receivers often prevents their practical implementation. In this thesis we commence with a review and tutorial on Quantum Search Algorithms (QSA) and propose a number of hard-output and iterative Quantum-assisted MUDs (QMUD) and MSDDs (QMSDD). We employ a QSA, termed as the Durr-Hyer Algorithm (DHA) that finds the minimum of a function in order to perform near-optimal detection with quadratic reduction in the computational complexity, when compared to that of the ML MUD / MSDD. Two further techniques conceived for reducing the complexity of the DHA-based Quantum-assisted MUD (QMUD) are also proposed. These novel QMUDs / QMSDDs are employed in the uplink of various multiple access systems, such as Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access systems, Space Division Multiple Access systems as well as in Direct-Sequence Spreading and Slow Subcarrier Hopping SDMA systems amalgamated with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and Interleave Division Multiple Access systems. Furthermore, we follow a quantum approach to achieve the same performance as the optimal Soft Input Soft-Output (SISO) classical detectors by replacing them with a quantum algorithm, which estimates the weighted sum of all the evaluations of a function. We propose a SISO QMUD / QMSDD scheme, which is the quantum-domain equivalent of the MAP MUD / MSDD. Both our EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts and Bit Error Ratio (BER) curves show that the computational complexity of the proposed QMUD / QMSDD is significantly lower than that of the MAP MUD / MSDD, whilst their performance remains equivalent. Moreover, we propose two additional families of iterative DHA-based QMUD / QMSDDs for performing near-optimal MAP detection exhibiting an even lower tunable complexity than the QWSA QMUD. Several variations of the proposed QMUD / QMSDDs have been developed and they are shown to perform better than the state-of-the-art low-complexity MUDs / MSDDs at a given complexity. Their iterative decoding performance is investigated with the aid of non-Gaussian EXIT charts.

Grover's Quantum Search Based Data Detection Algorithm for MIMO System

Jing Shen, Muqing Wu, Linlin Luan

Abstract Maximum like-lihood (ML) algorithm is the optimal detection scheme for the data detection of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, but it has a high complexity in its preprocessing. For good performance and low complexity, a new Grover’s Quantum Search (GS) based data detection algorithm for MIMO system is proposed. It can increase the probability amplitude of solutions while reducing the probability amplitude of non-solutions. By Grover’s iterative process, the probability amplitude of solutions can reach maximum. So it can get the solutions after measurement with a high probability. The simulation results show that the proposed data detection algorithm for MIMO system has a very close to ML based data detection in Bit Error Rate (BER) performance, but it has lower complexity than ML based data detection algorithm.

When are Quantum Algorithms Applicable for Signal Decoding in Wireless Communication?

Abdulmohsen A. Alsaui, Ibrahim Al-Nahhal, Octavia A. Dobre

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology utilizes multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver to enhance data transmission speeds and reliability. Traditional MIMO decoding methods, however, can become increasingly complex as the number of antennas and modulation order rises. Quantum computing brings forth a new realm of information processing with significant potential. This study investigates the applicability of quantum algorithms for decoding information in MIMO wireless communication systems. Specifically, the Dürr-Høyer quantum search, based on Grover’s algorithm, and optimal quantum sorting algorithms are leveraged to reduce the query complexity with an analysis of the complexity and achievable bit error rate performance of the quantum-assisted decoders. The study considers cases of MIMO diversity, spatial modulation, and multiplexing transmission using both maximum-likelihood and fixed-complexity sphere decoders. By examining a variety of communication scenarios, this work aims to assess the applicability of quantum algorithms across different operational regimes and aids in extending the methodology to other communication systems.

Quantum Minimum Searching Algorithms for Active User Detection in Wireless IoT Networks

Muhammad Idham Habibie, Claire Goursaud, Jihad Hamie

The key features of 5G, such as ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) and massive machine-type communication (mMTC), are designed to address the need for low latency and the ability to connect a large number of devices in the IoT context. To support these constraints, mobile devices transmit information without previously establishing a connection with the base station (BS). This requires the Base Station to detect in real-time the active users (process known as Active User Detection (AUD)). With classical processors, one can employ the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method (the optimal detector, but suffers from high complexity and delay), or suboptimal ones (which are simpler, but less reliable). Meanwhile, quantum algorithms, particularly Durr and Hoyer (DHA) algorithm, addressing minimum searching problems, can significantly reduce complexity while keeping good performances. However, these algorithms were designed for generic problems, and their initialization and parameterization are blindly done. Nonetheless, we can have access to prior information on the system’s behavior. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to adapt and improve these quantum algorithms by using prior knowledge on the system for the AUD problem. We first propose a novel algorithm, the Improved Iterative Minimum Searching Algorithm (IIMSA) where we define more efficiently the parameters. Then, further enhancements of IIMSA are obtained thanks to a better initialization of the algorithms by exploiting classical preprocessing of the received signals with classical Conventional Correlation Receiver (CCR) or Zero Forcing (ZF). The obtained results show that these proposed algorithms operate more efficiently (i.e., less complexity with better accuracy).
