Controlled atom dynamics in a double-well optical lattice

Marco Anderlini, Jennifer Sebby-Strabley, J. Kruse +2 more

We report on the experimental demonstration of dynamic control of the motional state of atoms in a 2D double-well optical lattice. First we describe experiments in which the atomic distributions obtained by loading Bose–Einstein condensates of rubidium atoms in the lattice are dynamically split by transforming a 2D lattice with period λ into a 2D lattice with period λ/2, and we show how this procedure allows for the study of the coherence and interaction properties of the system. Then we show how we can efficiently adiabatically transfer the population between adjacent sites of the lattice, as well as between different energy bands, by using dynamic modifications of the potential.

Ultracold Quantum Gases in Optical Lattice with Topological Defects: Its Physics and Experimental Proposal

Zhang, Xing-Hai, Wenjun Fan, Jinwei Shi +1 more

In this paper we give a proposal to realize optical lattices with manipulated dislocations and study the physics of ultracold quantum gas on a two-dimensional (2D) optical square lattice with dislocations. In particular, the dislocations may induce fractional topological flux on 2D Peierls optical lattice. These results pave new approach to study the quantum many-body systems on an optical lattice with controllable topological lattice-defects, including the dislocations, topological fluxes.

Highly Controllable and Robust 2D Spin-Orbit Coupling for Quantum Gases

Wei Sun, Bao‐Zong Wang, Xiaotian Xu +7 more

We report the realization of a robust and highly controllable two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling with a topological nontrivial band structure. By applying a retro-reflected 2D optical lattice, phase tunable Raman couplings are formed into the antisymmetric Raman lattice structure, and generate the 2D SO coupling with precise inversion and C_{4} symmetries, leading to considerably enlarged topological regions. The lifetime of the 2D SO coupled Bose-Einstein condensate reaches several seconds, which enables exploring fine-tuning interaction effects. These essential advantages of the present new realization open the door to explore exotic quantum many-body effects and nonequilibrium dynamics with novel topology.
