Improving the Renormalization Group approach to the quantum-mechanical double well potential

Published Jan 1, 2001• 0 citations
OpenAlex

Abstract

The gap between ground and first excited state of the quantum-mechanical double well is calculated using the Renormalization Group equations to the second order in the derivative expansion, obtained within a class of proper time regulators. Agreement with the exact results is obtained both in the strong and weak coupling regime.

Ordered phase of the O(N) model within the nonperturbative renormalization group

Marcela Peláez, Nicolás Wschebor

We analyze nonperturbative renormalization group flow equations for the ordered phase of Z_{2} and O(N) invariant scalar models. This is done within the well-known derivative expansion scheme. For its leading order [local potential approximation (LPA)], we show that not every regulator yields a smooth flow with a convex free energy and discuss for which regulators the flow becomes singular. Then we generalize the known exact solutions of smooth flows in the "internal" region of the potential and exploit these solutions to implement an improved numerical algorithm, which is much more stable than previous ones for N>1. After that, we study the flow equations at second order of the derivative expansion and analyze how and when the LPA results change. We also discuss the evolution of the field renormalization factors.

Systematic Convergence in Applying Variational Method to Double-Well Potential.

Wai‐Ning Mei

In this work, we demonstrate the application of the variational method by computing the ground- and first-excited state energies of a double-well potential. We start with the proper choice of the trial wave functions using optimized parameters, and notice that accurate expectation values in excellent agreement with the numerical results can be aquired by cautious systematic improvement of trial wave functions.

Revisited functional renormalization group approach for random matrices in the large- N limit

Vincent Lahoche, Dine Ousmane Samary

The nonperturbative renormalization group has been considered as a solid framework to investigate fixed point and critical exponents for matrix and tensor models, expected to correspond with the so-called double scaling limit. In this paper, we focus on matrix models and address the question of the compatibility between the approximations used to solve the exact renormalization group equation and the modified Ward identities coming from the regulator. We show in particular that standard local potential approximation strongly violates the Ward identities, especially in the vicinity of the interacting fixed point. Extending the theory space including derivative couplings, we recover an interacting fixed point with a critical exponent not so far from the exact result, but with a nonzero value for derivative couplings, evoking a strong dependence concerning the regulator. Finally, we consider a modified regulator, allowing to keep the flow not so far from the ultralocal region and recover the results of the literature up to a slight improvement.

Towards an accurate determination of the critical exponents with the Renormalization Group flow equations

Bonanno, A, Zappalà, D

The determination of the critical exponents by means of the Exact Renormalizion Group approach is still a topic of debate. The general flow equation is by construction scheme independent, but the use of the truncated derivative expansion generates a model depencence in the determination of the universal quantities. We derive new nonperturbative flow equations for the one-component, Z_2 symmetric scalar field to the next-to-leading order of the derivative expansion by means of a class of proper time regulators. The critical exponents eta, nu and omega for the Wilson-Fisher fixed point are computed by numerical integration of the flow equations, without resorting to polynomial truncations. We show that by reducing the width of the cut-off employed, the critical exponents become rapidly insensitive to the cut-off width and converge to values that are in good agreement with the results of entirely different approaches.
