Exact Solutions of the One-Dimensional, Two-Dimensional, and Three-Dimensional Ising Models

Abstract

According to the traditional solutions, there is no magnetisation in the one-dimensional Ising model in the absence of external magnetic field. It is shown that there is a mistake within them. In them, local order of spins was not taken into account and the partition function and the correlation function were calculated wrongly. In this paper, that mistake is corrected and a new solution is presented. According to it, there is ferromagnetism in that model. Analogously, solutions of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional Ising models are obtained.

An exact solution to the partition function of the finite-size Ising Model

Rong Wei

There is no an exact solution to three-dimensional (3D) finite-size Ising model (referred to as the Ising model hereafter for simplicity) and even two-dimensional (2D) Ising model with non-zero external field to our knowledge. Here by using an elementary but rigorous method, we obtain an exact solution to the partition function of the Ising model with $N$ lattice sites. It is a sum of $2^N$ exponential functions and holds for $D$-dimensional ($D=1,2,3,...$) Ising model with or without the external field. This solution provides a new insight into the problem of the Ising model and the related difficulties, and new understanding of the classic exact solutions for one-dimensional (1D) (Kramers and Wannier, 1941) or 2D Ising model (Onsager, 1944). With this solution, the specific heat and magnetisation of a simple 3D Ising model are calculated, which are consistent with the results from experiments and/or numerical simulations. Furthermore, the solution here and the related approaches, can also be available to other models like the percolation and/or the Potts model.

Exact eigenvalues of the Ising Hamiltonian in one-, two- and three-dimensions in the absence of a magnetic field

No author provided

The Hamiltonian of the Ising model in one-, two- and three-dimensions has been analysed using unitary transformations and combinatorics. We have been able to obtain closed formulas for the eigenvalues of the Ising Hamiltonian for an arbitrary number of dimensions and sites. Although the solution provided assumes the absence of external magnetic fields an extension to include a magnetic field along the z-axis is readily extracted. Furthermore, generalisations to a higher number of spin components on each site are possible within this method. We made numerical comparisons with the partition function from the earlier analytical expressions known in the literature for one- and two-dimensional cases. We find complete agreement with these studies. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Exact solution of d-dimensional ising model for finite continuous spins (D) and non-zero external field (B)

Naveen Kumar

Making use of the Stratonovich linearization procedure for bilinear exponents and certain eigenvalue properties of the generalised Jacobi matrices, an exact expression has been obtained, in a closed form, for the partition function of the d (=3) dimensional, nearest neighbour coupled, Ising model for finite continuous spins(=D) in the presence of an external field. A Gaussian measure has been chosen for integration over the spin space. The method admits complete generalisation with respect to the dimensionality, the range of interaction and the sign of the interaction constant J (ferro- or antiferromagnetic). All thermodynamical quantities of interest can be obtained by taking suitable partial derivatives of the partition function. The critical indices can be ascertained for the cases of d=3 for which the theory predicts a second-order phase transition. For the ferromagnetic case(J>0), the spontaneous magnetisation vanishes identically the temperature T>T (the transition temperarture) and the magnetic susceptibility follows essentially the Curie Weiss Law.

One-Dimensional Ising Model with General Spin

Masuo Suzuki, Bunjiro Tsujiyama, Shigetoshi Katsura

The one-dimensional Ising model with general spin S has been formulated as an eigenvalue problem of order 2S + 1. Two methods to reduce the order to [S + 1] have been developed for calculating the energy and the susceptibility at zero external field. Exact solutions for S = 32 and S = 1 have been obtained. Numerical calculations of S = 32, 1, and ½ have been compared.

An exactly solvable two-dimensional Ising model with magnetic field

P. Azaria, Héctor Giacomini

An Ising model formulated on a Kagome lattice with anisotropic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and a magnetic field, is found to be exactly solvable for arbitrary values of temperature. The magnetic field acts on two of the three sublattices of the Kagome lattice. Explicit expressions for the partition function and the critical variety of the model are given.

II. Exact solutions of disordered Ising spin chains in a magnetic field

Stephen B. Haley

The one-dimensional Ising model with arbitrary nearest neighbor interactions and a magnetic field is formulated in terms of the spin correlation function relations derived in the preceding article I. The local magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions are shown to satisfy a set of coupled algebraic summation equations. The solution of this set is given in terms of a power series in hyberbolic tangents of the magnetic field strength, for chains of arbitrary length. For cases in which the interaction constants are random variables, explicit expressions are derived for the configurational averaged magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions to the lowest order in the magnetic field.
