Exact Chiral Spin Liquid with Non-Abelian Anyons

Hong Yao, Steven Allan Kivelson

We establish the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) as the exact ground state of the Kitaev model on a decorated honeycomb lattice, which is obtained by replacing each site in the familiar honeycomb lattice with a triangle. This CSL state spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry but preserves other symmetries. There are two topologically distinct CSL's separated by a quantum critical point. Interestingly, vortex excitations in the topologically nontrivial (Chern number +/-1) CSL obey non-Abelian statistics.

Bulk anyons as edge symmetries: Boundary phase diagrams of topologically ordered states

Tsuf Lichtman, Ryan Thorngren, Netanel H. Lindner +2 more

We study effectively one-dimensional systems that emerge at the edge of a two-dimensional topologically ordered state, or at the boundary between two topologically ordered states. We argue that anyons of the bulk are associated with emergent symmetries of the edge, which play a crucial role in the structure of its phase diagram. Using this symmetry principle, transitions between distinct gapped phases at the boundaries of Abelian states can be understood in terms of symmetry-breaking transitions or transitions between symmetry-protected topological phases. Yet more exotic phenomena occur when the bulk hosts non-Abelian anyons. To demonstrate these principles, we explore the phase diagrams of the edges of a single and a double layer of the toric code, as well as those of domain walls in a single- and double-layer Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). In the case of the KSL, we find that the presence of a non-Abelian anyon in the bulk enforces Kramers-Wannier self-duality as a symmetry of the effective boundary theory. These examples illustrate a number of surprising phenomena, such as spontaneous duality breaking, two-sector phase transitions, and unfreezing of marginal operators at a transition between different gapless phases.

Perturbative study of the Kitaev model with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking

Sébastien Dusuel, Kai Phillip Schmidt, Julien Vidal +1 more

We analyze the Kitaev model on the triangle-honeycomb lattice whose ground state has recently been shown to be a chiral spin liquid. We consider two perturbative expansions: the isolated-dimer limit containing Abelian anyons and the isolated-triangle limit. In the former case, we derive the low-energy effective theory and discuss the role played by multiplaquette interactions. In this phase, we also compute the spin-spin correlation functions for any vortex configuration. In the isolated-triangle limit, we show that the effective theory is, at lowest nontrivial order, the Kitaev honeycomb model at the isotropic point. We also compute the next-order correction which opens a gap and yields non-Abelian anyons.
