Quantum computing is currently a topic of interest that harnesses the phenomena of quantum mechanics. It can address several scientific challenges and generate new business opportunities. Recently, for the first time in the history of quantum computing, the authors are starting to see practical applications. Keeping this in mind, this article is designed to explore the field without any required prerequisites. The authors start with a brief overview of the fundamentals of quantum computing and also outline several applications. The timeline for widespread adoption cannot be predicted, but quite a few organisations have built the first generation of quantum computers using various hardware technologies. The authors have briefly covered the wide landscape of hardware technologies. The first generation of quantum computers can be programmed using available software development kits and accessed using online cloud services. Furthermore, the growing trend in investments and patents in the field of quantum computing is also presented. A major reason for this trend is the threat that quantum computers pose against cryptography.

Recently, rapid developments based on superconducting quantum electronics have been made in a technology for such quantum machines. In addition, big IT companies such as Google, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft are now investing heavily in this quantum technology. In this article, we will discuss recent developments in quantum computers and quantum annealing machines.
The concept of quantum computing has inspired a whole new generation of scientists, including physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, to fundamentally change the landscape of information technology. With experimental demonstrations stretching back more than two decades, the quantum computing community has achieved a major milestone over the past few years: the ability to build systems that are stretching the limits of what can be classically simulated, and which enable cloud-based research for a wide range of scientists, thus increasing the pool of talent exploring early quantum systems. While such noisy near-term quantum computing systems fall far short of the requirements for fault-tolerant systems, they provide unique test beds for exploring the opportunities for quantum applications. Here, we highlight an IBM-specific perspective of the facets associated with these systems, including quantum software, cloud access, benchmarking quantum systems, error correction and mitigation in such systems, understanding the complexity of quantum circuits, and how early quantum applications can run on near-term quantum computers.
Advancements in computer technologies have been evolving in order to provide new services or to improve recent computing performance. Applications of computer technologies to several real-world domains are becoming more realistic and efficient. Two challenges are taken into consideration when applying such technologies including more complicated user requirements and exponential growth of data. In the real world, which is driven by business, achieving user requirements is one promising way of yielding competitive advantages. Moreover, time constraints are also crucial for corporate users. Apart from structured data, unstructured data have been significantly generated via several platforms. Such aspects make data processing more demanding. Quantum technology, which is instantiated in physics, has been utilized in various fields including computer science. Even the real quantum computer is still in its early development, but other concepts such as quantum information and quantum computing are making progress. Furthermore, some quantum-based algorithms have been analytically proven to have higher performance compared to the traditional ones. According to such important milestones, quantum computing has been regarded as one of the key infrastructures of future computing. This paper aims to focus on the main aspects of quantum computing including its backgrounds and recent advancement to provide a clearer picture. Its recent applications to intelligent system enhancement, cybersecurity and cryptography empowerment, and finance are addressed.
