Quantum coherence in a quantum heat engine

Yun-Hao Shi, Hai-Long Shi, Xiao-Hui Wang +4 more

Abstract We identify that quantum coherence is a valuable resource in the quantum heat engine, which is designed in a quantum thermodynamic cycle assisted by a quantum Maxwell’s demon. This demon is in a superposed state. The quantum work and heat are redefined as the sum of coherent and incoherent parts in the energy representation. The total quantum work and the corresponding efficiency of the heat engine can be enhanced due to the coherence consumption of the demon. In addition, we discuss an universal information heat engine driven by quantum coherence. The extractable work of this heat engine is limited by the quantum coherence, even if it has no classical thermodynamic cost. This resource-driven viewpoint provides a direct and effective way to clarify the thermodynamic processes where the coherent superposition of states cannot be ignored.

Quantum Equivalence and Quantum Signatures in Heat Engines

Raam Uzdin, Amikam Levy, Ronnie Koslo

Quantum heat engines (QHE) are thermal machines where the working substance is quantum. In the extreme case the working medium can be a single particle or a few level quantum system. The study of QHE has shown a remarkable similarity with the standard thermodynamical models, thus raising the issue what is quantum in quantum thermodynamics. Our main result is thermodynamical equivalence of all engine type in the quantum regime of small action. They have the same power, the same heat, the same efficiency, and they even have the same relaxation rates and relaxation modes. Furthermore, it is shown that QHE have quantum-thermodynamic signature, i.e thermodynamic measurements can confirm the presence of quantum coherence in the device. The coherent work extraction mechanism enables power outputs that greatly exceed the power of stochastic (dephased) engines.

Quantum coherence and thermodynamic performance of an Otto heat engine using a pair of dipole-coupled two-level atoms

Hao Wang

Abstract We developed a model of a quantum Otto engine using two coupled two-level atoms. Based on the platform, we show that frequency detuning and the coupling strength induced by dipole-dipole interactions can lead to decoherence by disrupting coherent energy exchange. We focus on fundamental thermodynamic quantities, including heat absorption, release to heat baths, work done and efficiency. It is noteworthy that the interatomic coupling strength and frequency detuning do not merely affect the shape of the work and the efficiency but ultimately govern its quantitative magnitude. In the field of quantum thermodynamics, we have established an upper bound efficiency that is stricter than the Carnot limit. Moreover, our analysis confirms that quantum coherence enables the system to exceed the efficiency threshold of a classical Otto heat engine. The second law of thermodynamics holds all the while. Our results constitute a step forward in the design of conceptually new quantum thermodynamic devices which take advantage of uniquely quantum resources of quantum coherence.

Quantum thermodynamics, quantum correlations and quantum coherence in accelerating Unruh-DeWitt detectors in both steady and dynamical state

Omar Bachain, Mohamed Amazioug, Rachid Ahl Laamara +4 more

We investigate the interplay between quantum thermodynamics, quantum correlations, and quantum coherence within the framework of the Unruh-DeWitt (UdW) detector model. By analyzing both the steady and dynamical states of various quantum resources (including steerability, entanglement, quantum discord, and coherence), we study how these resources evolve under Markovian and non-Markovian environments. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of both the Unruh temperature and the energy levels on three key quantum phenomena: thermodynamic evolution, quantum correlations, and quantum coherence, considering different initial state preparations. The hierarchical structure relating quantum correlations and quantum coherence is determined. We further examine the thermodynamic performance of a quantum heat engine, highlighting the influence of memory effects and classical correlations on heat exchange, work extraction, and efficiency. Our results reveal that non-Markovian dynamics can enhance the preservation of quantum correlations and improve the engine's efficiency compared to purely Markovian regime. These findings provide insights into the role of quantum correlations and quantum coherence in quantum thermodynamic processes and open avenues for optimizing quantum devices operating in relativistic or open-system settings.
