Oscillations of photocurrent signals upon photoionization of polarized Ar and Xe atoms in magnetic fields

E. A. Viktorov, K. Miculis, Alexander Pastor +2 more

Ionization of polarized states of Ar and Xe atoms by femtosecond probe pulse in a supersonic beam in the presence of magnetic field was studied theoretically and experimentally. The revealed oscillation structure in the photoionization signals occurs due to the Larmor precession of exited atomic states in a magnetic field. We derived analytical formulas for the photoelectron current and explained the detected oscillations in terms of photon and atomic polarization moments. Our results indicate the possibility of implementing Doppler-free spectroscopy involving bound-free transitions.

Comparative Measurement of Transverse Nuclear Magnetization of Polarized 129 Xe and 131 Xe by Spin-exch ange Optical Pumping

Yu. Ye Jin, Seong Ho Min, Han-Seb Moon

We analyze the transverse nuclear magnetizations of 129Xe and 131Xe in a vapor cell containing natural Xe, 87Rb, and buffer gases. The Xe atoms are polarized through spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) with Rb atoms under low-magnetic-field conditions. From the free-induction-decay (FID) signal, we measure the nuclear magnetization of the Xe atoms in the Xe-Rb vapor cell. Furthermore, we measure the dependence of the gyromagnetic ratio on the magnetization of 129Xe and 131Xe by examining the amplitude of the FID signal of each isotope, and we evaluate the relationship between the magnetic field gradient and transverse relaxation rate for both of the 129Xe and 131Xe isotopes.

Visualization of foreign atoms by optical magnetic-resonance imaging of Cs atoms

Kiyoshi Ishikawa, Satoshi Morii, Katsunari Enomoto +1 more

We perform optical magnetic-resonance (MR) imaging of Cs atoms that are polarized by the transfer from the polarized Xe or Rb atoms in a glass cell as well as by direct optical pumping. With MR images of Cs by alternate optical pumping and detection the distribution of polarized Xe or Rb of low gas pressure is observed in a weak magnetic field. We also discuss the effect of the spin-relaxation and the spin-exchange collisions between Cs, Xe, and Rb atoms on the spatial resolution of MR images of the diffusing Cs atoms.
