Abstract

It is shown that the non-Gaussian operations can not only be used to prepare the nonclassical states, but also to improve the entanglement degree between Gaussian states. Thus these operations are naturally considered to enhance the performance of continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), in which the non-Gaussian operations are usually placed on the right-side of the entangled source. Here we propose another scheme for further improving the performance of CVQKD with the entangled-based scheme by operating photon-addition operation on the left-side of the entangled source. It is found that the photon-addition operation on the left-side presents both higher success probability and better secure key rate and transmission distance than the photon subtraction on the right-side, although they share the same maximal tolerable noise. In addition, compared to both photon subtraction and photon addition on the right-side, our scheme shows the best performance and the photon addition on the right-side is the worst.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on non-Gaussian operations with on-off detection

Xiaoting Chen, Fang Jia, Teng Zhao +3 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) with continuous variable (CV) is an effective method for achieving the high key rate, but is also limited to a short transmission distance. To overcome this limitation, some solutions have been proposed, including non-Gaussian operations, such as photon addition and photon subtraction using ideal photon source and number-resolving detection. Here we consider the effect of non-Gaussian operation for realistic photon source and ideal on-off photon detection. In the realistic case, it is shown that the performance of CVQKD can not be improved by both photon-subtraction/addition on the right side before the entangled source reaches the channel and photon-subtraction on the left side preceding the entangled source to the sender Alice before performing heterodyne detection, but be enhanced by the photon addition on the left side in a long distance case. These results may provide a useful reference for quantum information with continuous variable.

Underwater quantum key distribution with continuous-variable via photon additions

Jiali Huang, Wei Ye, Cunjin Liu +2 more

Quantum key distribution with continuous-variable (CVQKD) provides an alternative way for the security improvement of underwater optical communication, but facing into the awkward situation of short distance. For this reason, here we exploit photon addition operation at the emitter into enhancing the performance of underwater CVQKD. Based on numerical simulation, it is shown that applying photon-addition non-Gaussian operation between entangled resource and the sender can further enhance both the secure key rate and the transmission distance, compared to apply photon subtraction operation between entangled resource and the receiver. In addition, the influence of seawater quality factors in underwater CVQKD system is also considered, so as to provide technical support for underwater safety communication.

Performance improvement of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with an entangled source in the middle via photon subtraction

Ying Guo, Qin Liao, Yijun Wang +3 more

A suitable photon-subtraction operation can be exploited to improve the maximal transmission of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) in point-to-point quantum communication. Unfortunately, the photon-subtraction operation faces solving the improvement transmission problem of practical quantum networks, where the entangled source is located in the third part, which may be controlled by a malicious eavesdropper, instead of in one of the trusted parts, controlled by Alice or Bob. In this paper, we show that a solution can come from using a non-Gaussian operation, in particular, the photon-subtraction operation, which provides a method to enhance the performance of entanglement-based (EB) CVQKD. Photon subtraction not only can lengthen the maximal transmission distance by increasing the signal-to-noise rate but also can be easily implemented with existing technologies. Security analysis shows that CVQKD with an entangled source in the middle (ESIM) from applying photon subtraction can well increase the secure transmission distance in both direct and reverse reconciliations of the EB-CVQKD scheme, even if the entangled source originates from an untrusted part. Moreover, it can defend against the inner-source attack, which is a specific attack by an untrusted entangled source in the framework of ESIM.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with non-Gaussian quantum catalysis

Ying Guo, Wei Ye, Hai Zhong +1 more

The non-Gaussian operation can be used not only to enhance and distill the entanglement between Gaussian entangled states, but also to improve the performance of quantum communications. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) by using quantum catalysis (QC), which is an intriguing non-Gaussian operation in essence that can be implemented with current technologies. We perform quantum catalysis on both ends of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair prepared by a sender, Alice, and find that for the single-photon QC-CVQKD, the bilateral symmetrical quantum catalysis performs better than the single-side quantum catalysis. Attributing to characteristics of an integral within an ordered product of operators, we find that the quantum-catalysis operation can improve the entanglement property of Gaussian entangled states by enhancing the success probability of non-Gaussian operation, leading to the improvement of the QC-CVQKD system. As a comparison, the QC-CVQKD system involving zero-photon and single-photon quantum catalysis outperforms the previous non-Gaussian CVQKD scheme via photon subtraction in terms of a secret key rate, maximal transmission distance, and tolerable excess noise.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with non-Gaussian operations

Liyun Hu, M. Al-Amri, Zeyang Liao +1 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) provides an effective way to obtain the high secret key rate, but is limited by practical techniques. To overcome this limitation, we investigate the performance of CV-QKD protocols when non-Gaussian operations are applied to both sides of the channels, including photon subtraction and addition, and photon catalysis. A comparison is also made between Gaussian modulation and non-Gaussian modulation. We show that the optimal transmission distance cannot be improved by non-Gaussian modulation at the sender's side, but it can be improved by single-photon catalysis at the receiver's side. For a given modulation variance that exceeds a certain threshold, the performance of the zero-photon catalysis at the sender's side is the best when compared with other non-Gaussian modulations (except single-photon catalysis at the receiver's side), and it can always reach the optimal distance. Our paper will provide a useful insight for the use of non-Gaussian modulation to other CV-QKD protocols.
