The fate of the spin polaron in the 1D antiferromagnets

Piotr Wrzosek, Adam Kłosiński, Yao Wang +3 more

The stability of the spin polaron quasiparticle, well established in studies of a single hole in the 2D antiferromagnets, is investigated in the 1D antiferromagnets using a t t - J J model. We perform an exact slave fermion transformation to the holon-magnon basis, and diagonalize numerically the resulting model in the presence of a single hole. We demonstrate that the spin polaron collapses - and the spin-charge separation takes over - due to the specific role played by the magnon-magnon interactions and the magnon hard-core constraint in the 1D t t - J J model. Moreover, we prove that the spin polaron is stable for any strength of the magnon-magnon interaction other than the unique value found in a 1D antiferromagnet with the continuous symmetry of the spin interactions. Fine-tuning to this unique value is extremely unlikely to occur in quasi-1D antiferromagnets, therefore the spin polaron is the stable quasiparticle of realistic 1D materials. Our results lead to a new interpretation of the ARPES spectra of quasi-1D antiferromagnets in the spin polaron language.

Cumulant-expansion study of holes in quantum antiferromagnets

P. Prelovek, Igor Sega, J. Bona

The states of a single hole and of two holes in the planar quantum antiferromagnet are studied within the t-J model by performing the cumulant expansion in t/J and in the exchange anisotropy \ensuremath{\gamma}. Ground-state energies are calculated up to the n=12 order in t/J and to the m=6 order in \ensuremath{\gamma}. It is shown that results, which can be extended to smaller J/t, represent a very helpful supplement to exact diagonalization methods. In particular they yield finite-size corrections to previous results on the dispersion of single-hole states and to the binding energy of two holes, giving also more insight into the origin of binding.

Antiferromagnetic systems with spin gap: exact results

Indrani Bose

We describe some antiferromagnetic systems which exhibit spin gaps. We also discuss the effect of doping one such system, namely, the spin-ladders, with holes. Some model antiferromagnetic systems with spin gap are reviewed for which exact results are available. Exact results for a doped spin-ladder model are also mentioned.
