Abstract

In this paper, a new scheme of generating a three-dimensional array of optical trap is proposed by using a composite phase grating that is fabricated by liquid crystal spatial light modulator. The composite phase grating is formed by combining the circular grating, which is generated by transforming a one-dimensional rectangular grating into a circular grating that can produce the longitudinal array of optical trap, with a two-dimensional rectangular grating. The grating that generates 5× 5× 5 array of optical trap is simulated according to the technical parameters of the spatial light modulator. The output intensity distribution is calculated by using the Gaussian light wave with ordinary power as input light and focusing the diffracting light with lens. The results show that three-dimensional array of optical trap with a very high peak value of intensity and an intensity gradient is obtained around the focus of the lens. The optical dipole potential of trapping cold atoms achieves the order of mK, and the interaction force between the atom and the optical field is much greater than the atom gravity. When the high power laser is used as input light, the generated array of optical trap can also be employed to trap the cold molecules produced by Stark deceleration.

Generation of the array of optical traps by liquid crystal spatial light modulator

Songbo Gu, Shuwu Xu, Lu Jun-Fa +2 more

Liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) can be readily used to fabricate the diffractive optical elements. However, a disadvantage of the finite resolution always exists in LC-SLM. In this paper, a new scheme of fabricating phase grating with LC-SLM is proposed to produce one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) array of optical traps. The advantage of the LC-SLM is fully utilized and the disadvantage is well avoided in our scheme. The phase distribution of the grating is optimized by using iterative Fourier series expansion. The grating is designed by simulation according to the LC-SLM technique parameters, and the corresponding light intensity distribution is calculated. The results show that the array has very high peak value intensity and big gradient of intensity by illuminating the grating with a large detuning and low power laser. The optical dipole potential of trapping cold atoms achieves the order of mK, and the interaction force between atom and optical field is much greater than the atom gravity.

Generation of the controllable triple-well optical trap by liquid-crystal spatial light modulator

Qiaoqiao Zhou, Shuwu Xu, Lu Jun-Fa +3 more

A new scheme of generating the controllable triple-well optical trap is proposed, in which a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to fabricate the phase-type blazed grating and be illuminated with coherent monochromatic light. Three optical wells, each of which has the same intensity distribution, can be formed with relative position of the distribution of an equilateral triangle. The relative positions of the optical wells can be changed by simply and conveniently adjusting the phase distribution of the SLM to realize the evolution and reverse evolution from triple or dual wells to single well. The phase grating is designed by simulation according to the technical parameters of the SLM, and illuminated by the laser with ordinary power. The intensity distributions and intensity changes in the adjustment process for the triple wells are calculated. Results show that the controllable triple-well optical trap with very high peak value of intensity and intensity gradient can be obtained. It has many important applications in the experimental study of atomic and molecular optics.

Generation of Atomic Optical Lattices by Dammann Gratings

Ji Xian-Ming, Shuwu Xu, Songbo Gu

We first calculated the diffraction intensity distributions of the Dammann gratings illuminated by Gaussian light wave. The empirical equations were deduced by numerical calculations to calculate the parameters, such as the spatial period, the maximum intensity, and the maximum intensity gradient, of the optical trap array composed by a set of Dammann gratings and a focus lens. Thus, a novel type of optical trap array for trapping cold atoms (or molecules) was proposed and its features were discussed. The results showed the optical trap array with very short period could be generated. High optical dipole potential could be presented so as to have strong attractive force to the atoms to form atomic optical lattices of high lattice density. Compared with the optical lattices formed by standing wave interferences of CO2 laser, there are many unique advantages of which are formed by Dammann gratings.

A combinative triple-well optical trap for three-species cold atoms or molecules

Lu Jun-Fa, Qi Zhou, Yin Jianping +1 more

We propose a scheme to form a combinative triple-well optical trap for cold atoms or molecules in focus plane by using an optical system composed of a lens and a phase-type spatial light modulator (SLM) based on liquid crystal microdisplays illuminated by a plane light wave. The principle of forming a triple-well optical trap is analyzed and the characteristic parameters of optical potential are calculated. We also discuss the evolution between a tripe-well optical trap and a double-well one (or a single-well one). Additionally, the propotential applications of our triple-well trap and its novel optical lattices in four-wave mixing with matter waves, cold collision of three atomic species and so on, are explored.

Generation of an adjustable double-well optical trap by shift phase gratings

Ji Xian-Ming, Shuwu Xu, Lu Jun-Fa +2 more

A novel scheme was proposed to form the double-well optical trap by using shift phase gratings. A few pairs of adjustable double-well optical traps for trapping cold atoms or cold molecules were formed on the focal plane when the gratings were illuminated by plane light wave (or TEM00 mode Gaussian light wave) and focused by positive lens. The intensity distribution was calculated, and then the intensity distribution gradients as well as the analytical relations between geometrical parameters of the traps and the parameters of the optical system were derived. At the same time, three different evolution processes from double-well to unit-well were investigated. Also, optical dipole potential and photon scattering rate of the trapped cold atoms were calculated. The results show that the scheme not only is simple and convenient to realize, but also has wide application prospect in many fields, such as atomic physics, atomic optics, molecular optics and quantum optics.
